Aqueous cream is one of many emollients available on the market.
Emollients hydrate, soothe and soften the skin and can be used for all dry skin and scaling skin problems. The effect is somewhat short-lived though and one needs to re-apply as necessary to maintain that effect.
The main ingredients are emulsifying ointment and phenoxyethanol base added to freshly boiled and cooled purified water.
Having come across aqueous cream in my line of work countless times beforehand i finally ended up using it some four years ago on a daily basis. I have a big scar from an op on my stomach to which i was advised to originally apply another different preparation (E45 CREAM) to counteract the skin stretching and excessively drying and, i actually apply the stuff at least 3-4 times a day including on my hands which seem to have caught on with all this dryness business.
Aqueous cream is a non-toxic, externally-applied substance so there is no limit to how many times it can be applied if you unforunately suffer from more than a mild case of eczema (usually in conjunction with stronger preparations) or dry skin, nappy rash, contact dermatitis, itchy skin, etc. It can be used on all external parts of the skin area, used as soap (it actually leaves a thin film after washing off with water leaving the skin feeling fresh and smooth-speaking from experience) and can be added to the bath as well.
It is relatively non-greasy compared to other 'fattier' creams/ointments used for the same purpose and i find it is quickly and better absorbed by the skin if applied in reasonable segmented quantities at a time rather than putting one large blob and hoping for the best.
If you allergic to lanolin (wool fat) then you possibly maybe allergic to aqueous cream as well so do check first.
With the plethora of creams available for such conditions, aqueous cream ,for me, stands out as one of the best for mild dry skin conditions/eczema/itchy skin and is certainly fantastic value for money ( under £2 for a big 500g tub - yes that's right, no need to put on your glasses)- that's why i've used it instead of E45 cream (£8+ for 500g) being the tight person i am. But seriously you'll be saving lots of money for a product which in most cases is just as effective.
So go on, spoil your skin.
