Advantages: Fun subject to learn Disadvantages: Some lecturers ignore students
...Since I was 9 years of age I wanted to be an archaeologist and no it wasn't because of Indian Jones (which I still have not watched properly). When it came to choosing my degree course I applied to various colleges to do archaeology. I ended up at King Alfred's college in Winchester, which if I am honest is not the best place to study. Many aspects of the course were very interesting, however a number of the lectures seem to preoccupied with their own research projects to be concerned with the actual students. Also in order to graduate with an archaeology degree all that was required was two weeks actual fieldwork. My advice to anyone wishing to pursue a career in archaeology is firstly don't as the contracts are hard to come by and the money is worse and secondly don't go to KAC to study it....

...In July I graduate after four years of studying Archaeological Sciences and I can honestly say that my time in Bradford has been some of the most enjoyable in my life.
The department of Archaeological Sciences is unique in Europe for its integration of science and archaeology. The department offers five undergraduate degree programs, BSc Archaeology, BSc Archaeological Sciences, BSc BioArchaeology, BSc GeoArchaeology and BSc Geography and Archaeology. The course structure is well balanced allowing students a wide range of module options (a full list can be found on the departments webpage). At the end of the first year all students go on a compulsory field work project for a minimum of three weeks, although in practice many students go for considerably longer than this. ...If history is bunk, then archaeology is junk. As a degree course, archaeology tends to appeal to those of a certain mindset – words such as “eccentric”, “masochistic” and “alcoholic” spring to mind. It is essentially the study of the material human past, with the archaeologists endeavouring to find, study and classify the lost and abandoned traces of our ancestors (kind of like a dustman in reverse). Of course, to be able to undertake such a degree, then you have to have a sense of the ridiculous, as the whole subject aims to tackle unanswerable questions, being often ludicrous and ultimately futile. But hey, it is fun – in fact some people would even say it’s the most fun you can have with your pants on!
