I have a weakness - Ok maybe more than 1 but every weekend on his way home from work my husband stops to buy me…. No not flowers (can’t remember the last time that happened) but Archers Aqua Peach being my choice of drink..
I have at some time over the years drunk most brands of alcopop, bacardi breezers, WKD but usually return to the one that I prefer Archers Aqua.
~Why Archers?~ Archers was quite late onto the alcopops scene being easily beaten by Barcardi and their assorted flavour breezers and despite having a fruit flavoured spirit base, several fruit juice and vodka based drinks made it onto the market before Archers. Even when introduced Archers struggled against the popular brands mainly because it relied on a unique alcoholic taste of schnapps to make its sales and that was not a commonly drunk choice in the UK although many skiers had probably experienced Schnapps on the piste after a cold day in the snow. Mention Bacardi and most people already associated them with white rum so to add a fruit drink to the rum and introduce a new commodity was relatively easy but Archers. Similar experiences with vodka and fruit based drinks were also found.
Archers has a naturally strong fruit flavour in peach so attempting to make it into a market that relied on a variety of added fruits to its spirit base was going to be difficult. Introducing Cranberry, Raspberry, Lime and Orange Archers came later but I still prefer the Peach variant.
~What is it about this particular drink that I like?~ It is 5% volume in a 70cl bottle so are many drinks of this size. Ingredients appear to be only Archers schnapps with a crisp taste of peach, nothing spectacular there or is it and this is probably topped up with soda as there is no mention of the actual ingredients on the bottle. No other spirit has used peach and I think it is that which brings me back time after time. I do not like Cranberry so Archers Cranberry would just not do, but should there be no Archers Aqua Peach available I would rather go without. I also think that the drink is not as sweet as an Archers and Lemonade would be. Once you get used to the taste you discover just how easily the drink slips down and it is also not particularly gassy, so should not leave you bloated like many other similar drinks and as the aftertaste is so slight you continue drinking easily without the need to stop to change tipple and at only 5% volume is is going to take quite some bottles to get you drunk, so if you have a sweet tooth or are a particular fan of peach then you could probably drink this all night without it becoming too sickly.
The bottles take the standard Archers branding - with a plastic covering trying to give that frosted glass appearance. A coloured band around the top denotes the flavour, although some of the colour bands are very similar.
~How much Does it cost?~ The bottles do comment sizes and usually the 275ml bottle retails at about £1.40 per bottle 70cl (700ml) bottle for £2.48. Many of the supermarkets do special offers 4 275ml bottles for £6.00 or 2 70cl bottles for £5.00, so it is worth shopping around. I must admit I rarely buy these in a pub or club so could not tell you how much they would cost there but you are probably looking at upwards of £2.25 a bottle of 275ml.
If you like peach then dive straight in and enjoy a bottle of this drink but if you are not into sweet drinks or are used to different fruit drinks like orange then you may find this to be an acquired taste. An advantage of this drink is that the larger bottles have a screw top, so it is easy to store should you decide that you can't drink a whole one, they also seem to keep their flavour once resealed for a period of time.
Please remember that this is an alcoholic beverage and should not be drunk by anybody under 18, or if you are intending to drive.
