But not after I saw Archos 605 Wifi. I don’t think it lacks behind any of those two if not better (Please keep reading this review, don’t take a decision). As a video player Archos 605 Wifi is nearly incomparable and way ahead of the pack even if you take into account Creative Zen, Vision W or Cowon A2 for that matter. Archos 605 Wifi’s audio quality can be compared very favorable with any MP3 player of repute. It is equipped with an excellent customizable 5 band equalizer and Bass Boost control which is totally independent. You can grumble that as an audio player it is on the heavier side.
Please note that the sound enhancement applies both to Video and Audio play back. The best part is that it is capable of booting in multiple USB modes, MSC and MTP, helping those interested in pulling media files from both Mac and PC. It works as both, a Windows Media Player device and drag and drop hard drive.
Now talking about battery life, there is a problem there, since it gives you around four and a half hours of video and just around thirteen hrs for audio file play back. But again 605 Wifi’s power demands for the Wifi antenna must be taken into consideration.
But the real expenditure begins now. The Opera Web Browser at $30 dollars is a must to have real feel of the Wifi, then there is no problems with Flash Videos. Another $20 each for formats like H264, MPEG 2/VOB files Get the Archo hardware accessory DVR Station for another $100 which coverts it to a very sophisticated Digital Video Recorder and gets you an excellent home entertainment system. The DVR Station also allows 605 Wifi to display its content on your television using the 605 Wifi’s remote control.
The basic price is $299. Do you think that’s all to get the best out of Archos 605 Wifi? As I have mentioned above, it boils down to spending $299 plus $30 plus $ 20 plus $100 so how much does real Archos 605 Wifi cost? $449, it not at all cheap as it looked in the beginning ! That's why I said before hand (please read the review don’t take a decision). A bit of marketing gimmickry ? I don’t know, may be, may not be.
Excellent product but before jumping into it delve a little bit deep inside just not get impressed by tech specs.
Advantages: Great for travel entertainment, impressive mic, touch screen Disadvantages: Plugins cost extra, annoying "buy this addon" reminders, not so great battery life
...I've owned lots of Archos media players over the last couple of years - starting with the old 300 series, then two 500 series ones, and quite recently the 605 Wifi. If there's one thing I love about it, it's the touch screen. If there's one thing I definitely don't love, it's the attitude the developers behind the firmware - it constantly bugs you to buy things. 'Buy this plugin now!', 'buy the stand so you can connect it to a TV!', 'buy this accessory ... ...a good one.
The Archos 605 is a little harder to use than the older ones, but that's a given since it also has lots more options. It's a handy device, and it's great for recording from your TV, listening to MP3s or using as a dictophone. The internet browser is of somewhat limited use; this is because of two things. First and foremost, the fact that you have to buy a DLC plugin to use the browser in the first place, and secondly because lets face ...

...alternative look no further. The Archos 605 provides a worthy alternative to the I-pod video, although it suffers from a less ergonomic design and is heavier due in part to the hard drive. However where it does better the ipod is it's durability with a rugged case and strong solid build quality feel to the buttons it will be hard to break. The large screen makes viewing a pleasure and the battery is capable, in my experience, of at least 5 hours ... ...really show off what the Archos is capable of coupled with the large screen this makes watching videos whilst commuting or on a long journey viable and pleasurable.
However it is not without it fault,the screen is a decent size but can be hard to see in brighter weather., the chunky design means portability does suffer somewhat in comparison to the other video devices and though ,i am yet to encounter any major problems, i did have a problem with ...

The Archos 605 is a fully functional multi media player that is controlled via touch screen technology enabling the user to play movies, record videos (although an additional bullet camera is required), listen to MP3s, look at photographs, carry out voice recording and browse the internet (with an additional plug in) amongst others.

The video quality is very good and perfectly acceptable to watch. It is a vast improvement ... ...given the price of the Archos 604. If using just the audio function I have found that the battery life is quite good and generally lasts up to 15 hours.
****Photo viewer****
It is possible to store and view photos on the Archos. I have yet to find a digital camera which will directly plug in to the Archos to transfer the photos so this must be done via a PC or laptop.
There is the ability to display a slide show which is a nice feature.

The archos 605 wifi has both good points and bad points. Lets start with the good points. The archos 605 wifi is very easy to use. You can choose between using the touch screen interface or the buttons to navigate. It is also very simple to transfer music, videos, pictures e.t.c onto the archos 605 wifi, either through syncing them automatically through windows media player or manually puting them on the archos hard drive. The archos also has very ... ...in speaker. lastly the archos has very large memory and also has a very easy to use internet browser, and is wifi enabled which is very useful. However the archos also has downsides to it. the archos it is very big and chnuky and not very comfortable in your pocket. its also very prone to crashing and freezes quite alot. The archos 605 wifi offers all this with an intelligent, user friendly interface, software and web browser, in my opinion much better than the Ipod touch's awkward equivalent. The archos can be operated either by using its excellent touch screen or via buttons for those who are inexperienced touch screen users. The Archos605WiFi has many features such as the option to record from the television, to surf the internet, it even has the ability to be used as a GPS. One downside is a lot of these features require additional money to be spent.
If you're a gamer then you might be a little disappointed by the fact that the with the Archos605 you will be limited to only playing flash games. The Archos605 basically just isn't a gaming device. If gaming is your main focus then you would be better off with a sony PSP or the GP2X.
You can also store/view pictures, which is a pretty ordinary feature on such a device but still appreciated.
The touchscreen though not completely necessary in most cases does seem to work pretty well.
One thing I did notice about the Archos605 is that the sound quality of the inbuilt speaker is pretty poor ...
