If you are an i-pod loyal looking for a new video device than look elsewhere, but for those seeking an alternative look no further. The Archos 605 provides a worthy alternative to the I-pod video, although it suffers from a less ergonomic design and is heavier due in part to the hard drive. However where it does better the ipod is it's durability with a rugged case and strong solid build quality feel to the buttons it will be hard to break.
The large screen makes viewing a pleasure and the battery is capable, in my experience, of at least 5 hours solid video playback but i am yet to meet the claim of 17 hours music playback advertised with the unit averaging about 13-15 hours without recharge. The interface is simple and straight forward and should take a short period of time to familiarize yourself with. The memory is generous and can accommodate thousands of music files. Though it features a large touch screen navigation is not dependent upon it meaning those not in favor of touch screen devices can use the buttons on the side. Sound quality is excellent providing good bass and treble characteristics particularly noticeable in film making background or theme music really "pop". Video quality and clarity is again excellent the demo videos really show off what the Archos is capable of coupled with the large screen this makes watching videos whilst commuting or on a long journey viable and pleasurable.
However it is not without it fault,the screen is a decent size but can be hard to see in brighter weather., the chunky design means portability does suffer somewhat in comparison to the other video devices and though ,i am yet to encounter any major problems, i did have a problem with the unit freezing but a recent firmware upgrade cured this problem. Also pressing the "lock keys" button at the top of the handset used to cause it to reset however this has been rectified by a firmware update.
Overall this is a massively competent real alternative to the Ipod and should be considered by anyone looking for a feature heavy portable media player but avoided by those put off by its size or unfamiliar interface. Plugins can be purchased to enjoy this unit to the full extent priced in Euros and available from the Archos website they do extend the features greatly ( Web browser allowing the unit to use its Wifi and an access point to become internet enabled), though without them it does not prevent it from being a serious contender.

Advantages: Great screen quality and size, built in speaker and stand. Disadvantages: The only downside is that it is fragile, and can be hard to get used to the on screen keyboard.
