I decided that I'd try and top my friends' new Ipods by buying a multimedia player. Looking at the market, the new Archos AV400 series easily came on top. They brought out two models, the AV420, the 20gb model, and the AV480, the 80gb model. Thinking of all the mps and films I intended to put on there, I decided to go to the 80gb model, added expensive, but definately worth it. All the software needed to convert files so they are compatable with the Archos come on the system, and are easy to install and use. I did find, though, that converting a full length film does take a few hours, which can be a bit of hassle.
The Archos comes with its own little docking station that allows you to connect it to a television. So if you don't have a computer, yo can record programs, dvds or videos straight from or via your television. Similarly you can play any files from the Archos on a television. The scart plugs needed to perform these operations are provided.
The archos provides sound playback, video playback and picture viewing. The mp3 browser is easy to navigate, and all the track information is provided, including space for the album cover. There are multiple video playback options, including viewing size (eg widescreen) and slowmotion. Sound and video recording is also available (but an extra video camera addon is needed).
The Archos has also a wide range of accessories from both Archos and external companies. I have managed to make mine compatable with my car, which is great fo long journeys. I've also found that I can plug my Playstation into it, and use it as a mini TV, also useful for long journeys!
Overall, the Archos are very expensive, but without a doubt the top of the range, so if you've got the money, go for it!
A few points to revise the review:
I bought the Archos before any alternative was available, and bought it from an American importted. It cost me £520, but The same model is now available for in between £420 and £480, just shop around!
Yes the Archos can be used as a mini VCR, and can record a hell of a lot as it encodes the video files pretty small, and has an 80gb hard drive. I've never actually used an IRiver, but I found the Archos screen easily big enough to watch anything.
