My boyfriend and I have decided to take the plunge and buy a house together. Instead of buying a nice conventional house that has plush wall to wall carpets and a swanky fitted kitchen, we have chosen a house in need of some love and attention and of course a magic wand.

The house is gorgeous and will be lovely when it's finished, but at the moment we have no carpets, an old 50's style kitchen and no central-heating. I hate being cold, so we have invested in a few gas heaters to put in each of the rooms, but I don't like leaving a gas fire on all night, but at the same time I hate being cold in bed, so I decided to purchase an electric blanket to take the chill off the sheets as I retire to bed.

As I had a couple of unused Argos vouchers hidden in my purse I decided to put them to good use and put them towards an electric blanket.

Argos had a small selection of blankets and I plumped for a middle of the range one. The Winterwarm blanket is one that goes under the sheets so that you are lying on top of it. It cost me £39.99 for the double bed version, which I thought was a reasonable price considering there are many that cost over £50.

The Winterwarm is a good size it fits the double bed, but doesn't reach the edges. It is held secure by strips of fabric that you tie in place under the mattress to stop the blanket slipping in the middle of the night.

There is a control pad on the blanket so that you can set the automatic timer to come on when you want and also to set your heat preference. There are six settings to choose from and whatever you set the blankets inbuilt heat sensor will work with your own body's temperature and the temperature of the room to ensure that the correct heat is obtained. The pad is single control, but if arguments are sure to be had then there are dual control pads available at a slightly higher price. These are great as each person can set their own side of the bed to whatever they want without being too hot or too cold. There is an automatic timer which can be set to come on to heat your bed ready for you retiring.

The underblanket is made from a lovely soft fleecy material. It can be washed in a washing machine, and also there are no worries of having to leave it to drip-dry as it can be popped in a tumble drier. Great for me as I only have gas fires and we still don't have a washing line erected and even if we did the weather hasn't been ideal for hanging washing out.

My favourite part of the blanket can be found at the end of the bed. I hate having cold feet so I like to use the separate turbo pre-heat setting which you can switch on to give instant heat.

When I was little I was always told every night when I had my electric blanket to remember to switch it off because they were dangerous. Nowadays, they are much safer and this is one of the blankets you can sleep with while it's on. Great for me as our house is like a freezer so I can keep warm all night.
Argos provide a 5-year guarantee with this blanket and should anything go wrong they will be happy to replace it.

I am really pleased with this purchase. I no longer have to wear layer upon layer of warm clothes with a pair of unsexy knee-high socks.

It will be a couple of months before we are ready to get our central heating installed so this blanket is going to be a godsend.
