Advantages: Slim, lightweight, relatively inexpensive, writes CD's quickly
Disadvantages: Noisy, lots of movement whilst reading from drive

...Having a laptop without an optical drive meant that I had to go for an external solution. After doing a lot of research, I had a pretty good idea of what was out there for me. A fortuitous trip to Singapore allowed me to get this device at a 30% discount to what I would have paid at home. It is now possible to get these devices on ebay at the same sort of price I paid. And that price is well worth it. These devices are considerably cheaper than some of the 'name' brand external optical drives such as Iomega and Targus. What this device lacks in high-street crdibility, it makes up for in quality. The drive is, as the name suggests, quiet slim and very portable. It is the length and breadth of a CD, and about 1 1/2 cm's thick. If you get two CD cases and put them on top of each other, then thats pretty much the size of it. The silver... Read review

Advantages: Are there any Good Brand Image
Disadvantages: The size weight and power use

...I have had and repaired many Dell machines in my time, I have found out that Dell dont have many problems with hardware failure, however there are other problems. If you are using this system as a method for portability you can forget it. This system is like carrying a dead weight about you, the drivers are not the best design and as for spec against weight and size you may as well forget it. Thought his system is better than teh cheaper names (Advent) and so on however there are other problems, such as this system being about twice as thick as its competitors. Though not slim it does have many uses such as a door step, however I belive this system drains your battery as if you where doing 200 mph in you car. If you do by this system think of getting the largest battery possible or a secound battery. The Jazz drive option is pointless... Read review

Advantages: Small, Light, No external power required
Disadvantages: None I can think of!

...Very slim device, with sleek black plastic case and rounded edges. Has rubber feet to prevent slipping when placed on desk. Compatible with all Operating Systems (including Linux) due to FAT formatting. As with all drives, can be repartitioned or reformatted as preferred. Has Windows XP software on board to simplify backups. Very short USB cable (about 10cm), so an extension may be necessary. No power supply (gets power from USB port), so truly portable. Fast USB2 connection. Reliable WD Hard Drive - I've had it for over a year with no problems. This is now a low storage capacity Hard Drive at 60GB, but I would thoroughly recommend it (or a larger capacity Passport) for anyone who needs genuine portability with their hard drive....
