...Having a laptop without an optical drive meant that I had to go for an external solution. After doing a lot of research, I had a pretty good idea of what was out there for me.
A fortuitous trip to Singapore allowed me to get this device at a 30% discount to what I would have paid at home. It is now possible to get these devices on ebay at the same sort of price I paid. And that price is well worth it.
These devices are considerably cheaper than some of the 'name' brand external optical drives such as Iomega and Targus. What this device lacks in high-street crdibility, it makes up for in quality.
The drive is, as the name suggests, quiet slim and very portable. It is the length and breadth of a CD, and about 1 1/2 cm's thick. If you get two CD cases and put them on top of each other, then thats pretty much the size of it.

Advantages: sleek, stylish, affordable Disadvantages: hasnt got DVI
...LCD TFT monitors have been far to pricey in the past - until now.
You can pick one of these babies up for around £130 if you hunt around. I have had mine now for about 3 months and it has definatley jazzed up my living room!
It is ultraslim and black / silver in colour. I think the best thing about it is the curvy stand which gives you loads more desk space.
Also the warranty is second to none if you have a problem, GNR will come to your door step and swap it - cant be bad! I also like the integrated speakers - you cant see them because they are in the back - again no more external speakers so loads of desk room.
The battery supply is also integral, it takes a kettle lead that plugs in the back, I dont know how they got this so slim but the picture quality is great!
If you do not have a TFT monitor, this is the one I would suggest...

Advantages: Are there any Good Brand Image Disadvantages: The size weight and power use
...I have had and repaired many Dell machines in my time, I have found out that Dell dont have many problems with hardware failure, however there are other problems.
If you are using this system as a method for portability you can forget it. This system is like carrying a dead weight about you, the drivers are not the best design and as for spec against weight and size you may as well forget it. Thought his system is better than teh cheaper names (Advent) and so on however there are other problems, such as this system being about twice as thick as its competitors. Though not slim it does have many uses such as a door step, however I belive this system drains your battery as if you where doing 200 mph in you car. If you do by this system think of getting the largest battery possible or a secound battery.
The Jazz drive option is pointless...
