My Husband purchased a Vauxhall Omega in June 2005 from Arnold Clarks Newcastle Stoke-on-Trent, After 16 days my husband had to take the car back as the engine management light had come on, they had the car for 1 week, and told us that it was now fine. It was fine until February 2006 when again the engine management light came on and the car (It is Auto) went into what they call get you home mode, whereby the gearbox sticks in high gear meaning the car has to be driven manually. It was taken to a Vauxhall garage of Arnold Clarks, and was there for 3 days. We were told that they had changed the Cam Belt and Water Pump, Why we do not know as it had nothing what so ever to do with the problem. The problem had not been resolved at all. We took the car back as the problem was getting worse, they had the car for 4 days and we were told that the car had been mended, that 2 ECU's had been replaced as they didn't know which was at fault. The ECU's cost £500 each according to them. When we collected the car my hubby reversed out of the parking space put it in drive and surprise surprise the car was in get you home mode. They attached the car to there machine and stated that the same faults were still showing and would need to keep it in. We left the car and rang every day to enquire as to if they had mended it and they stated that they could not repair it as they didn't know what was wrong with it.They stated that they were in touch with the car manufactors and they were at a loss as to the problem. We have bought the car home and they have now told Trading Standars that they found no fault, and that there was no fault code stored in the ECU. 'They will not be advising the branch to take any further action in this matter.' So DO NOT buy a car from Arnold Clark as once they have had your money they do not care. Incidentially the car cost £6000 with a 2 year warranty that is not worth the paper it is written on. We have a car that we can not sell and is only worth scrap value. I am currently awaiting to see what Trading Standards next course of action is and then will be taking them to court.
Today, had a phone call from Trading Standards as Arnold clark stated that they found no faults on the car when it was in there garage, but Trading Standards have a letter from there head office stating that they 'were at a loss as to how to clear the fault' Await to see what happens now.
Have today 13th Sept received another letter from Trading Standards that Arnold Clark sent stating
'The initial letter was an inaccurate account of the situation with the car' and they apologise for the confusion and will not be taken any further action. They still state that there was never a fault with the car.
Have contacted the garage concerned and have now got the name of there Auto electrian who dealt with the car while we were there, and made his statement that the car was still showing the same fault as when we bought it in. Now we are seeking legal advice via solicitor and will be hopefully taking them to the small claims court.
They should not be allowed to lie and worm there way out of this situation, am now getting rather fed up.
