The Grand Daddy Of Them All

Advantages: One of the world's greatest living golfers
Disadvantages: Not a single thing

~ ~ Arnold Palmer, from here on called by his nickname “Arnie”, is the American professional golfer who almost single-handedly dragged the game of golf from the doldrums in the 1950’s and 1960’s, when it had hit perhaps one of its lowest ebbs.
Born in 1929 in Latrobe in Pennsylvania, this was a guy who looked as though he had just come of the building site, with his rugged features and hands that resembled two sides ...
...wasn’t anything special, and he broke almost every rule in the book when it came to “how to” swing the golf club. The best way to describe it would be to liken it to someone swinging a sledgehammer at a breezeblock!
But boy, was it effective!
With his charming and constant smile and magnetic personality, Arnie attacked golf courses with a mixture of sheer brute force and the putting touch of an angel. Every round of ... more

Battling Arnie Thrills His Army

Advantages: Exciting attacking style
Disadvantages: Should have won more majors

...championship bout." Charles Price. Arnold Palmer has a style of play that was largely responsible for his unique charisma. He always made the game seem a battle against the golf course. Spectators at an event and the television viewers at home loved to see him play and even today, when he is well into his 60's, many would rather see him open a soft drink can than others hole a full bunker shot. Top players have mostly hit the ball very hard, but ...
...majors. The appeal of Arnold Palmer continues, even though it is over 30 years since he last won a major. On the US seniors tour and on his occasional appearances elsewhere, Arnie still has his 'army', however far down the field he may be. Career Milestones: - 1929 Born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania - 1954 US Amateur Champion, after which he turns professional - 1955 1st professional win, the Canadian Open - 1958 Wins his first major, the Masters ...

Simply The Best - Better Than All The Rest

Advantages: See opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion

~ ~ It’s hard to believe that this great American golfer, arguably the best who has ever held a golf club, is now over 60 years of age. As a young golf fanatic in the 1960’s, there were three golfers, “The Big Three”, who were head and shoulders above all the others; Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus. They strode the fairways of the world like kings, and between them won more major championships and tour events than any other golfers in the history of the sport. ~ ~ Nicklaus was born in Columbus, Ohio, in January, 1940, and burst onto the golf scene in his late teens, when he won the US Amateur Championship twice. It is fair to say that he was the Tiger Woods of his day, as he hit the ball further and higher than anyone had ever seen before. His sheer strength was awesome to behold, and I can ...

The More I Practice The Luckier I Get.

Advantages: A fierce competitor and fine golfer.
Disadvantages: Can be very outspoken at times.

~ ~ This diminutive South African golfer was born in Johannesburg in 1935. Standing at only 5 foot seven inches in his bare feet, he was an unlikely candidate to go on to achieve greatness in the world of golf, where the ability to hit the ball a long way is at a premium, especially on the Pro Circuit. ~ ~ But from a very young age Player embarked on a daily exercise regime that allowed him to make the very most of his small stature, and which he continues to follow to this day, even at nearly 66 years-of-age, and with his “glory” years long in the past. ~ ~ That there were “glory” years is without question. Player was in his prime at the same time as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, the two US golfing legends, and throughout his career had many formidable battles with both, on many occasions emerging ...

Can anyone tame the Tiger

Advantages: The man is just pure class
Disadvantages: Didn`t convert his 19 runner-up place into majors

Everywhere you look you see Tiger Woods name splattered on all Golf magazines , bill boards , television ads , sports sponsers etc Yet not too far from him on the 18th hole stands Jack Nicklaus the one man who at the age of 60 is no doubt the greatest golfer the world has ever seen. Tiger Woods a comparative newcomer to the game when compared to Jack Nicklaus has yet to prove the test of time. Where are his challengers ?? Unlike the great Jack Nicklaus who in his prime time had to continually withstand the challenges of Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. These three players captured the imagination of the golfing public yet no matter how fierce and tight the competition was Jack Nicklaus always pulled through to win those all important trophies. This sustained pressure lasted for many years yet Jack Nicklaus withstood it season after ...
