Journey Through The Empire
Advantages: Good Adventure and Atmosphere of the period Disadvantages: A little too technical

A journey around the Earth.... in eighty days? Surely such a thing is not possible. Yet this is the bet taken up by Phileas Fogg in Around The World In Eighty Days. Jules Verne was a great admirer of the British Empire. The wealth, the splendour and the engineering, products of the greatest empire in the world fascinated him in his writing.
This novel is primarily about a race. For Fogg and a bet that could double his fortune or leave him penniless and for his servant Paspartout who faces a similar crisis over a gas burner he left on before leaving on the journey. Together the two men travel the many cultures of the British Empire with the police on their tales over a misunderstanding but threatening to stop their endeavor in it's tracks. The presence of the two men in different cultures exposes the English regard to foreigners and the detachment of such men to foreign cultures.
Upon reading this book I certainly found that it reflects the time in which it was written but despite this the characters are still very diverse and likable with only a few archaisms is attitude which are not appreciated nowadays.
Verne was a scientist perhaps one of the first science fiction writers so techniacl details are important to him in his works. These can be rather distracting and detract the reader from the point. Also Verne several times in his books inadvertantly reveals his plot intentions before time. Apart from this though, Eighty Days Around The World is a very enjoyable book.
Advantages: Well-written, good pacing, excellent story. Disadvantages: None I can think of.
...he is able to journey around the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg is a man well known for his punctuality. In fact little else is known about him, for he is obviously a gentleman, with money, but no-one knows where it comes from. He is presumed to have travelled but no-one knows for certain. And as for family, nothing is known. He is in short a mystery man. Passepartout, his newly-appointed French valet, was looking forward to a peaceful life serving ... ...So he follows Fogg around the world to try to nab him.
Their journey is beset by many obstacles, but along the way they make some new friends. Through their various fortunes, time is made up or lost as the go along. It's a constant will they, won't they throughout the book, with you willing them to win all the way.
The characters were well developed, and I particularly enjoyed Passepartout's character as he watched his new master's cool persona ...

Advantages: Great characters, superb storytelling, excellent moments of adventure Disadvantages: Indians being shown as Uncivilized
...other was the book Around the World in 80 Days which kick started my addiction to novels. As a kid, I was already into books, but most of my reading was limited to Tintin, Asterix and Amar Chitra Katha comics, and most of my book reading was limited to fairy tales and folk lore stuff. I had an excerpt from Around the World in 80 Days, in my class V English primer, and the premise of a man going around the world just excited me no end. And I wanted ... ...Around the World in 80 Days is the story of a reclusive British millionaire, Phileas Fogg whose only way of spending time is reading newspapers and playing whist at the Reform Club of which he is a member. At the introduction to the book, we come to know that he is very precise in nature and he had fired his servant because the temperature of the water he used for shaving was 2 degrees lower. His new servant Passerpatout a lively and passionate Frenchman ...

Advantages: Very easy to read Disadvantages: perhaps a bit too short!
...local that he can go around the world in 80 days and he leaves the next morning!
The journey across the continents is well described and although the obstacles he meets on his way are seem obvious the solutions around them are not! I was gripped by the story and my poor children 13 months and 32 months have been forced to watch Postman Pat a bit more than they would have liked!! I did manage to get to the end in two days and I thought the ending ... ...almost disappointed when the story ended.
I found the book very easy to read even though we have been suffering from sleepless nights with a teething baby! It is very well written and contains a surprising amount of detail for such a short book. I would think it would be easily read by anyone over 10 . Some of it would probably be more understood by adults (a bit like the simpsons!!!!)
I loved the character of Phileas Fogg, the old fashioned English ...

Advantages: very stimulating Disadvantages: a bit childish
When I was eleven to twelve I read almost all of Jules Vernes books. This one was one of my favourites. The characters are quite strong and the plot pretty well woven. It stimulated my mind to experience other countries and the journey also triggered the adventure in me.
When I write this review I can vividly remember Phileas Fogg and the other characters. The drawing of the characters were simple and the picture of the world did not have many nuances ...

Advantages: Classic novel Disadvantages: Well, it is 125 years old!
'Around the World in 80 Days', in case you didn't know, chronicles the journey of one Phileas Fogg, a London gentleman, in his attempt to circle the globe in (no kidding!) 80 days. Whilst today that wouldn't be too tricky, our 19th century hero has to make use of everything from trains to sleighs to make his almost impossible expedition.
This book was written over 125 years ago, but apart from the methods of transport employed you wouldn't know ...

"Le Tour du Monde en 80 Jours" is a delightful adaptation of JulesVerne's classic novel "Around the Worldin80Days", by Emilie Pattay, and is part of the "Simple French Readers" series of illustrated books. (Please understand "Simple French Readers" in the right context!!!) The French is of a moderately simple standard, and any colloquialisms and complications that do creep into the text are explained at the rear of the book. Books of this sort are an excellent medicine for Higher, Standard Grade, A or O level French exam jitters. ...

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Mr. Phileas Fogg lived, in 1872, at No. 7, Saville Row, Burlington Gardens, the house in which Sheridan died in 1814. He was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club, though he seemed always to avoid attracting attention; an enigmatical personage, about whom little was known, except that he was a polished man of the world. People said that he resembled Byron-at least that his head was Byronic; but he was a bearded, tranquil Byron, who might live on a thousand years without growing old. Certainly an Englishman, it was more doubtful whether Phileas Fogg was a Londoner. He was never seen on 'Change, nor at the Bank, nor in the counting-rooms of the "City"; no ships ever came into London docks of which he was the owner; he had no public employment; he had never been entered at any of the Inns of Court, either at the Temple, or Lincoln's Inn, or Gray's Inn; nor had his voice ever resounded in the Court of Chancery, or in the Exchequer, or the Queen's Bench, or the Ecclesiastical Courts. He certainly was not a manufacturer; nor was he a merchant or a gentleman farmer. His name was strange to the scientific and learned societies, and he never was known to take part in the sage deliberations of the Royal Institution or the London Institution, the Artisan's Association, or the Institution of Arts and Sciences. He belonged, in fact, to none of the numerous societies which swarm in the English capital, from the Harmonic to that of the Entomologists, founded mainly for the purpose of abolishing pernicious insects.
