..."German thrillers stink." This from an editor of a German publishing house. Indeed, the thriller/mystery genre is an Anglo thing, it was born in England and is still dominated by British and American authors, in fact so much so that if you enter a bookshop in Germany, you don't know where you are, the heaps of bestsellers near the entrance are invariably thrillers by British or American authors, often the titles aren't even translated. This doesn't mean that there are no German thrillers at all, but they rarely acquire national and hardly ever international fame. To have one's German thrillers translated into English is thus like being knighted, Ingrid Noll can really be proud! ...Confession time: S.J. Harris is a friend of mine. He’s also a deeply lovely person. I’m going to rave about his incredible and endless talents, because they’re incredible and endless, not because he’s my friend, and a deeply lovely person. But you should know, just in case it matters to you. S.J. Harris is a cartoonist by trade (and almost certainly by nature). He’s written a number of humorous graphic books (a guide to hats, most notably) and illustrated them all with his immeasurably subversive flair. It’s terrible for someone with my lack of artistic knowledge to even try to define his style (on seeing a cartoon of Ophelia banked with umbrellas the best I could do was “Renoir by way of Tim Burton”), but the man himself describes it as sometimes a form of Art Deco, sometimes...
