Incident--the superb sequel to the hyper-hyped, Whitbread Children's Book of the Year-shortlistedArtemis Fowl. The Arctic Incidentsees the slightly older, perhaps slightly more mellow, arch-criminal Artemis recovered from his last adventure, richer now that he has his half-a-hoard of fairy gold, and happier since the Clarice Starling-esque super-fairy Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon returned his mother's ailing mind to full health. But there is still much unfinished business: Artemis Fowl Senior disappeared when a daring escapade, designed to free his family from their criminal--not to mention deeply lucrative--past and move the family's assets into legitimate enterprises, went horribly wrong. Held captive by the Mafiya (the Russian organised crime sindicate) for over two years, he has been declared officially dead, but Artemis junior knows in his heart (yes, he does have one) that his beloved father is still alive and determines to find him. Meanwhile Captain Short is temporarily on assignment to Customs and Excise as punishment for letting Fowl separate her and her People from their gold and is finding her stake-out duties a little dull. But it soon becomes obvious that the pair have need of each other's considerable skill base, and before long they are on track for an adventure that will ultimately have far-reaching consequences for both of them.If you enjoyed the first book, you won't be disappointed by the second. Initially the pace is perhaps a little slower, but once the sparks between Holly and Artemis begin to fly, and the adventure that tests their endurance to their emotional, physical and intellectual limits begins, the pages just keep on turning. The high-tech hocus pocus and complex James Bond-style storyline will keep even the most reluctant reader enthralled, while the developing tension between Holly and Artemis becomes increasingly intriguing and is more than enough to keep readers coming back for more. Add to the mix a fair dollop of humour, the occasional sprinkling of right-on commentary about the state of the planet, plus the fact there are enough hooks in the story to ensure you will be gagging forArtemis III, this chilling, thrilling adventure is a seriously cool (in more ways than one!) must-read for anyone aged nine or over. --Susan Harrison

Instead of kidnapping fairies for ransom, as he did in his first adventure, he joins forces with them to rescue his father from the Russian Mafia. Fairy good indeed... Review ofArtemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident - Eoin Colferby

Advantages: Witty, rollercoaster entertainment Disadvantages: Very few
...the ones featuring child prodigy Artemis Fowl. We know they're hip and trendy because they come in bright sparkly covers, and a certain High Street newsagent flogs them off nineteen to the dozen in hardback.
However, theediscerning wasn't terribly keen on the first in the series, for it struck him as too scatalogical, although it did have finer points. He is therefore pleased to say this sequel, the second in presumably a long and lucrative line, ... ...The first time round, Artemis himself is trying to destroy the harmony theediscerning spoke of, as he has stolen a copy of the Fairy Bible if you like, which would let him hold the whole fairy kingdom to ransom with their treasures of gold, and more importantly, scientific/magical secrets.
Here the sequel begins with disharmony again - Artemis is trying his best to wind up his long-suffering public school psychiatrist. Meanwhile, the "Mafiya" (ouch, ...

Advantages: Another cracking read Disadvantages: Not as good as the first book
...All the favourites are back; Artemis the teenage criminal mastermind; Butler his butler (my personal favourite); Holly Short, Commander Root and Foley from the fairy world; even Mulch Diggums makes a comeback (albeit under duress)
This time around there are dirty politics afoot in the lower elements and someone is planning a takeover of power. Someone has been supplying contraband human products to the B’wa Kell (sort of goblin gangsters). The fairy ... ...set out to find him. Artemis is busy with plans of his own, plans that may lead him to his missing father.
Not wanting to give too much away Artemis makes his peace with the fairy world and aides them in their fight against the political coup that has occurred in the lower elements. In return enlists their help on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped father from the Russian mafia. Plenty of action certainly, but more interestingly we start ...

Advantages: excellent book, great read Disadvantages: not quite as good as the first one
...far. I thoroughly enjoy the Artemis Fowl books. They are not just magically written, but every aspect of the book is incredibly detailed and imaginative. It is also a very different type of book. It's fresh and new. It doesn't follow a formula, like some genres can, but it is unique in its style. This is part of what makes it so easy to read. What I found when I was reading this book was that because it didn't follow a pattern, I never knew what ... ...a bestseller in Ireland, and Artemis fowl, the first book featuring the brilliant young anti-hero, was an immediate international hit. Artemis Fowl: The arctic Incident was an instant number one best seller, as was this book and Artemis fowl: The Opal deception.

Advantages: Nice action packed fun for all the family. Disadvantages: Hard to put down, forces you to buy the third! :-)
...really enjoyed reading the first Artemis Fowl book and have just found the second one equally as enjoyable.
The plot starts seemingly seamless amount of time after the first book and developes the characters even further than before introducing new 'species' and even more of fowley's ingenious technology. I have to admit I haven't read the third book yet, but it waiting there to be read as soon as I finish the other book I am currently reading. ... ...the affaires of the nafarious Artemis Fowl, a young a brilliant minded criminal. The plot of this story is more about Artemis' father and the search for him, than any of Artemis' dastedly deeds and so has a touch more emotion than the first. At times during the book you even start to feel sorry for the little villain. Adventure is certainly top of the list with this book as the story is set in many different places including a radioactive area of ...

Advantages: The gangs all here again Disadvantages: A little contrived
...that the underground fairy city is automatically locked down when the C-Cube “pings” them.
So how does the second sequel measure up to it’s big brothers? Not as sophisticated plot-wise as previous books but it’s fast moving more has more excitement than you could shake a large stick at. Colfer seems to have fun when pitting Artemis and Butler against the almost as smart gangster and his just as dangerous bodyguard.

Advantages: Is an excellent addition to the series Disadvantages: May be a bit fantastical for some readers
...I found this book extremely addictive, though a bit slow to start with. I would advise anyone planning on buying this book to read the first two ArtemisFowl books first, as it would get rather confusing for someone who doesn't already know the plot.
EoinColfer has written a few good childrens books, including ArtemisFowl, ArtemisFowl - The ArcticIncident, The Wish List & The Supernaturalist. Born in Ireland, I have noticed that a fair few of his books are set there.
The general outline of the series is about a child genius, ArtemisFowl, who kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short) from a holy spot in Ireland, with the help of his assosiate, Butler and holds her for ransom. As the series progresses, he slowly builds a rocky relationship with the Captain, and when the LEP (fairy police) ask Artemis for help, he agrees...
