When a fund manager is prepared to invest his own pension fund in the fund he is managing, I'd say that shows confidence and commitment. The Artemis management team may have started Artemis in 1997, but that was not their first experience of fund management. Consisting principally of the former Ivory Sime UK management team, they already had an excellent reputation for their previous performance when managing £2 billion of funds such as the top performing ISIS investment trust. I understand that, not only do the management team have heaps of their own money invested in their funds, but their pensions too.
Artemis (in mythology the daughter of Jupiter) is being heralded as the new Jupiter and that is one superb accolade. Jupiter funds may well have been so successful due to the personal gains that the team stood to make if the funds performed well, and Artemis have created a similar situation but with a different strategy.
Every single one of the Artemis funds is soaring high and it is difficult to chose between them.
In its time since launch, about four months, the Income Fund has seen 30% growth, which is about 25% more than the FTSE.
Artemis New Enterprise Fund has seen 40% growth since its launch on 17 May.
Artemis UK Smaller Companies Fund is among the top three performers in its sector over one year, with 172.4% growth. The fund was only launched in April 1988 but has already seen 320% growth since launch.
