Nun of that, now...
Review of The Story of Painting - Wendy Beckett by
frkurt
Advantages: Fun, lively, interesting, colourful
Disadvantages: Exclusively Western in approach
...that a nun going through the museum would have (a) been interesting, (b) been publishable, (c) been television-worthy, or (d) been within the realm of credible imaginings? And yet, here is the proof, on my coffee table. Sister Wendy's smiling face, next to a scowling Vincent, greets me each day with my morning cocoa.
This is a book to be savoured. It cannot, like the morning cocoa, be rushed and enjoyed. This must take time. Not because the text ... ...and low-gloss format to make the pages vibrant and durable yet easily seen. Care has gone into the production of this volume. None of the art is reduced to black and white, but rather presented in glorious colour. With over 800 images in under 400 pages, this is a feast for the eyes. Each page is dominated by art, not text. That makes for slow moving, like reading a museum..
Sister Wendy Beckett takes us on an historical tour of painting (in the ...

Artists point of view: A handy companion
Review of The Art Book: Mini Edition - Phaidon Press by
ceda13
Advantages: Quick and simple, not too much information - no overload
Disadvantages: only a bit of information on an artist and the picture is too big
...Artist, this is one of the many art books I have in my collection.
Half of these books are the kind of book you skim through looking for a well known picture or an extract of information which is a sentence and this book is one of those.
It is a collection of artists from every art background - from modernism to renaissance to aboriginal art. They are of course sorted by surname and consist of only one page per artist so you can imagine how much ... ...picture.
If you ignore the simple nature of the book, it is in itself a very handy little companion which sits in your collection.
When looking up a certain artist, you can therefore then have that little amount of information, the one main picture of that artist to your knowledge so that when you look further into you artist on the internet you are not going to be looking at another artist with the same name, which happens more than you think.

Phil uncovered
Review of Philip Lynott (The Rocker) - Mark Putterford by
Lauren007
Advantages: Everything you could ever want to know
Disadvantages: Slightly upsetting in places
This is quite a significant book to me. I grew up listening to Thin Lizzy and being Irish, my whole family was totally in love with their music. Phil Lynott was such a complex character I felt I owed it to him to read this book, just to prove that there was more to him than just the drugs. I learnt so much about him and the band that at points I felt I knew them. It was strange to think that if only Phil had stopped the drugs, he'd still be here. ... ...gives us all the gory details of his life, it tells tales of Phils hilariously flirtatious character, his obsession with music and showed us what a loving father he was and how much he loved being a father.
Last year I had the privelige of meeting his son and I felt like I knew everything about his father and he knew so little (he had only just found otu Phil was his father due to Phil giving him away because of his religion). It was amazing, it ...

Banksy wall and peace
Review of Wall and Piece - Banksy"" by
mopmanwill
Advantages: really interesting book, very inspirational
Disadvantages: may not suit young children and specific to certain intrests
This book is very inspirational and after reading it fills your mind with ideas and creation. I bought this book not long ago and since i haven't put it down. I call it a book but to me its more like a gallery. Banksy expresses very political views by doing stencil art in some of the main cities of the u.k such as London and Liverpool. This book simply takes you on a journey through his work. The book documents his work in gallery's and current projects ...
