Filmmaking for the Terrified
Review of Filmmaking for Dummies - Bryan Michael Stoller by
Magdalena
Advantages: In-depth information, covers everything
Disadvantages: Prices mentioned are US dollars
...anyone who is interested in filmmaking professionally, in any capacity. It covers every aspect of the filmmaking process, from coming up with the ideas to distributing your finished film, so you could be reading this book if you want to be a screenwriter, a lighting technician, or even a marketing manager for a production company.
Bryan Michael Stoller is (I quote) "an international-award-winning filmmaker, who has produced, written and directed ... ...through the basic principles of filmmaking - what exactly are all of the steps I need to follow when making my film in order to give it the best chance of being successful? As part one is only the introduction, it only introduces the reader to the principles and logic, and references very well the book's other chapters for further detail on many of the issues raised. To give you an example, part one mentions "Scheduling your film shoot" in half a ...

Better than the hype.
Review of Private Parts - Howard Stern by
ronniec
Advantages: Funny, touching, a bit sad too actually.
Disadvantages: Can't think of any.
You may remember all the hype surrounding this film - that is was basically just porn, swearing and violence. The ad campaign didn't help much either, with the semi-naked woman draped around the words "Private Parts" in an appropriate position.
However, after watching this film you realise there's a lot more to it than that. Howard Stern may be famous for his shock-jock radio work, but another side is revealed to him here. From his "secret" pot-smoking ...

Phil uncovered
Review of Philip Lynott (The Rocker) - Mark Putterford by
Lauren007
Advantages: Everything you could ever want to know
Disadvantages: Slightly upsetting in places
This is quite a significant book to me. I grew up listening to Thin Lizzy and being Irish, my whole family was totally in love with their music. Phil Lynott was such a complex character I felt I owed it to him to read this book, just to prove that there was more to him than just the drugs. I learnt so much about him and the band that at points I felt I knew them. It was strange to think that if only Phil had stopped the drugs, he'd still be here. ... ...gives us all the gory details of his life, it tells tales of Phils hilariously flirtatious character, his obsession with music and showed us what a loving father he was and how much he loved being a father.
Last year I had the privelige of meeting his son and I felt like I knew everything about his father and he knew so little (he had only just found otu Phil was his father due to Phil giving him away because of his religion). It was amazing, it ...
