Dreams That Gliltter - Girls Aloud - A Sparkly Book!
Advantages: Get to know more about the group Disadvantages: Perhaps not aimed at men to read
Dreams that Glitter – our Story – Girls Aloud.....
I have never really been a massive fan of Girls Aloud, I mean I have liked their music and of course followed them through the stages of the TV show Pop Stars the Rivals but I had never liked them enough to go out and buy a CD of theirs. However, I have been very much getting into reading auta lot of auto biographies and biographies in the last few years and so when I saw this is Woolworth's (RIP) ... ...RRP of this book is £14.99 pence and both this price and the price I paid are,I feel, reasonable amounts for what you are getting. The book itself is very well put together with a lot of pictures from the beginning of the girls grouping right up to when the book was published. It is in a hardback format and the pages inside are that of a high gloss, high standard finish.
The book is set out in 17 different sections each giving an account on different ...

Hedonistic but touchingly real.
Advantages: Quite nostalgic for anyone who grew up with Britpop Disadvantages: End is hurried.
...evening.
Admittedly, I've always been bit of a fan of Alex James (but then that's why people would choose to read it), so I may be a little biassed, but I found it a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of one of the Britpop revolution's rich and famous. And what a lifestyle!
The account of his early years, not too short not too long, sets the scene for the notorious years very well and provides a great description of how Blur came to be. Perhaps ... ...the rest of the band- it really is about HIM and what he was thinking, feeling and what motivated him at the time. The account of his life life post-Britpop seems a little hurried and seems a little disjointed from the rest of the book but is interesting nonetheless.
As you'd expect from the autobiography of a pop star, the writing isn't the most poetic ever but it seems honest and that's why it makes such a good read. ...

RIFFS, SPLIFFS AND MUSIC FESTIVALS
Advantages: Interesting read, informative Disadvantages: Not a complete history of 60's music
...born in 1942 from a white very middle class background; he first discovered a love of music from listening to his parent's old scratchy blues and jazz recordings. Boyd did more than simply become a fan he sought out those artist he loved many of which were living in relative poverty and helped to bring them to the attention of a wider white audience. When we think of sixties bands we might think of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi ... ...shunned by American audiences both white and black whilst being worshipped by newfound British fans. It took a British blues explosion with bands like The Yardbirds, Cream, The Stones, Fleetwood Mac to take this music back to its home in the US and get homegrown audiences interested. I'm not claiming and neither is Boyd that he single-handed gave rise to this musical revolution but he was certainly a part of it and he was certainly there to witness ...

Fan of Radio One? Read this...
Advantages: A non-fiction page turner, very well written Disadvantages: Time for an update? Will not appeal to all
'The Nation's Favourite', Simon Garfield's real-life account of the behind the scenes going on at Radio One, was recently passed on to me with recommendations from a good friend. (If interested, you should be able to pick it up for next to nothing on Amazon or Ebay)
He, like me, is one of those sad acts that can name every Breakfast Show host at Radio One (R1) since it's launch (but would have no hope of doing the same with, say, US Presidents, ... ...website at www.simongarfield.com).
The Nation's Favourite also contains an excellent index so that you can dip in and out of favourite stories. If you detest Radio One and all it stands for, this book will pass you by, but if, like me, you like a bit of modern pop culture, this makes for a very interesting read. For a non-fiction book, this is a real page-turner and I guarantee you won't want it to end. Time for a sequel perhaps? ...

A great biography
Advantages: very comprehensive Disadvantages: none
...the emotional conundrum that is Morrissey than the comparatively straight-laced guitar genius, Johnny Marr. Indeed a large section of the first part of the book is a history of the Morrissey family before little Stephen's conception. Notes of interest include the fact that Mozza's dad was a good footballer. The most interesting parts of the book however are those that deal with the band's shortlived career. Rogan searches for explanations for some ...
