Advantages: Lots of information, extremely clear and helpful Disadvantages: Over-explains and doesn't motivate or inspire
?t know whether I actually needed The Mature Student?s StudyGuide; believe it or not, I still remember the basics of critiquing, revision and essay writing from when I did my A levels, 5 years ago. However, it was nice to have that reassurance that I am capable of returning to education and I ended up jotting down several pages of notes ?just in case?. I would have liked more inspiration and motivation ? there are some quotes from mature students, but I would have liked more and with more detail. I suspect that, like me, most mature students are more worried about implementing the skills they have and ?fitting in? than learning to read a textbook exactly as Dawson prescribes. The Mature Student?s StudyGuide is a great starting point for preparing to return to education, but I can?t see it being much of a help beyond that ? borrow it instead ...
Advantages: lots of relevant case studies, covers a range of topics Disadvantages: can seem a bit pricey at first, lots of info to take in
During my 2 years of studying A-LevelPsychology, I found the Longman studyguide by Mike Cardwell essential. At first the book looks a little daunting as it is huge (makes a good door stop, giving extra value for money!) and each page is crammed with text.
The book covers many subject areas from social relations, to mental health to crowds etc and follows the current A-Level syllabus.
The book is constantly revised so it is always up-to-date. Perhaps the most useful part of this book for me was the fact that after it states the theory it backs up its points by using relevant case studies. At the end of each chapter it summarises the key points in bullet point format and also sets you practice essay questions which help you retrieve the information you've read.
You can purchase this book from all good book stores and WHSmith also ...
Advantages: Light-hearted but surprisingly informative Disadvantages: No contents page!!!
Introducing Psychology is one of many in te Introducing... series. I had done a psychology A'Level and just begun a psychology degree when I picked this book up in a second hand shop.
One of the first things I do with a reference book of any kind is turn to the contents page to see if I'm interested in any of the chapters, then I generally flick through.
To my consternation Introducing Psychology does not have a contents page!!! It goes from the title page straight to a page headed 'What is psychology?'. I have since made loads of notes on this title page, such as page 60 - behaviourism, but I don't really see why te author couldn't have done so. There is an index, but that's more specific and I don't find them useful in buying decisions.
Having flicked through the book I decided it looked interesting, and fun with loads of funny little ...
