Manufacturer's product description
The FM2017 is an industrial-strength switch that's affordable enough to use at the end of a 100BaseFX fiber run for workgroups or Broadband over Ethernet delivery to tenanted buildings. With 16 ports of 10/100BaseTX and an optional slot for fiber uplinks, all 17 ports can be used simultaneously. FM2017 series of switches are engineered for high-performance, low-cost workgroups as desktop connectivity in small offices, departmental workgroups in education and medium-sized enterprise with fiber connected backbones to servers or central distribution switches interconnected by fiber. Used in networks that include the Asante IC3524, 3548 FM2009, FX1000 and FS7000 desktop and workgroup switches and the Asante IC4000 backbone fiber distribution switches, Asante offers an end-to-end, high performance, low cost fiber solution, which is unequalled. Asante offers the industry the widest range of managed and unmanaged fiber connected workgroup, desktop, backbone switches and network cards. For multi-tenant, multi dwelling and fiber to the home applications, the FM2017 is very suitable as an entry level Tenant Access Device (TAD). With VLAN support per port allowing secure Tenant connection this switch allows highest performance with lowest available industry cost.

Advantages: Cheap, Easy to configure Disadvantages: SFP GBIC ports are shared with copper ports, loud fan.
...I haven't found a cheaper 16port Gigabit Ethernet switch than this Netgear. This 19" rack or desk mountable switch has 16 copper ports and two SFP GBIC ports. The GBIC ports are shared with copper ports 15 & 16 - so you get to use either or, not both, which is a bit of a shame - but they do say it is a 16portswitch after all... They have at least given you the option of adding either short or long range fibre capability to the switch.
The switch will work out of the box as if it were unmanaged, but then you'd be missing the point...
The switch is manageable via its built in web server, which provides an easy to use interface to all the common functions you would expect - 802.11Q VLAN tagging, Quality of Service, Jumbo frame support, 802.3ad link aggregation. You can upgrade the firmware using the web interface too, keeping...

Advantages: Easy to set up, configure and use Disadvantages: None
...We currently run an 80 user network in our office. While the main traffic of our network is handled by 6, 24 port rack mounted switches, my little IT office has 7 PCs in it with not enough ports on the wall to connect them up.
this poses a problem. To connect to our network, you need a network connection on the Wall. There are 4 connections in our office and 7 machines. Obviously 7 into 4 does not go so a solution was needed.
The answer?
A small desktop based switch that would allow us to connect up to 16 computers to one Network connection on the wall.
The Product?
Well we use Netgear equipment in our office because you know with Netgear, you are buying quality at an affordable price.
So we opted for the FS116 Desktop Switch.
The size of it?
Well its about an inch high and about a foot long. It is about 6 inches from fron to back...

The GS105 switch comes supplied with manuals, 12 Volt (1.2Amp) PSU, ethernet cable, and the unit itself. Installation is very simple and requires no configuration as this is an un-managed switch.
