...I?
The Asda store which I used is not one of Asda's largest. As such the Optician department is relatively small. The Optician was a very nice guy although, as he was quietly spoken and not English, I did have to ask him to repeat his self occasionally. This could happen anywhere though.

The downside of this Asda was that there was not a great deal of choice in frames. However most frames are similar really. I think if you choose to pick your frames on-line Asda has much more choice. Of course I would not get my discount then so the store is the choice for me.

I have worn spectacles since my late thirties, so getting on for twenty years now. My eyesight has increasingly deteriorated and my previous optician told me, a couple of years ago, that I was starting with cataracts. Lovely, yet another bonus of getting old.
Except for once I have used Dollond and Aitchison for my eye test and to purchase new glasses. This has mainly been because my only other experience was of Specsavers and two horrendous pairs of specs. These ended up a total waste of money and so I thought I would stick with the tried and tested D and A's.
Knowing I was a little overdue my eye test this year I thought about trying somewhere else. This was mainly down to low funds and D and A's ever increasing prices. A few friends had used Asda's Optician service and said that they were really pleased with their new glasses so I thought, Why not?. The other reason was that, because hubby works for Asda, I knew I could get a 10% discount. Added to this I did a crafty this year and booked my appointment for the staff, Christmas, 20% discount day and was laughing. Well was I?
The Asda store which I used is not one of Asda's largest. As such the Optician department is relatively small. The Optician was a very nice guy although, as he was quietly spoken and not English, I did have to ask him to repeat his self occasionally. This could happen anywhere though.
Before the eye test I had a couple of extra tests. One was the usual puff of air in the eye to check pressure and for any signs of Glaucoma. One was a field of vision test and I am not sure what the last one was. It was something similar though. The assistant who carried out these tests was not very customer friendly and definitely needed her customer care skills fine tuning. I also felt a bit on show as the area where the test was carried out was almost in the store.
The room where the eye test was done was a little bare looking. It somehow lacked the professional feel that D and A's has. Even the eye test equipment seemed more basic. However looking at the eye test objectively all the same tests were carried out just as successfully as D and A's, so I guess that what was missing was window dressing.
After the eye test a helpful young lady helped me choose my new specs. Hubby was there but in what capacity I am not sure. He just seemed to want me to pick any style so that he could get home quick. Men eh. This assistant was totally different from the first and really helpful. Time did not matter which was good. The downside of this Asda was that there was not a great deal of choice in frames. However most frames are similar really. I think if you choose to pick your frames on-line Asda has much more choice. Of course I would not get my discount then so the store is the choice for me.
Part of the problem with my rubbish eye sight is that I cannot see what I will look like in any possible new glasses. D and A have a computer photo screening which does help although I hate to see myself on it. At Asda the manager offered me a sort of monocle to look through but I still could not see the new specs properly as it made me screw my eyes a little, plus we could not stop laughing.
An additional staff bonus was that the eye test was free. Hoorah. I picked a pair of reactalite, anti glare lens varifocals. The various offers included reading glasses or prescription sun glasses. I plumped for a pair of reading glasses as varifocals are a pain if you want to read when laid down, like in bed. The offer meant these readers cost me only £10.
All in all, due to the staff discounts, my test and two pairs of glasses came in at only £200. This is really good compared to D and A. I am in HSA and so was able to claim £100 back and felt I got a really good deal.
The eye test was thorough and my new glasses are perfect. The only downside was that when I picked them up the manager was having a day off and there was no staff member able to make sure that my new specs fitted correctly, so I had to go back for this.
The prescription is good as is less severe on my eyes. The Optician at Asda explained what type of cataract I have, which explained some of my sight problems. Although my cataracts are not large yet they are situated where light enters the eye. This is why I have been finding that in bright sunlight I cannot make out faces and forms as they are just silhouettes. I will apparently need to have my cataracts operated on sooner rather than later. This is the first time an optician has actually explained my eye problems, which at least eased my fears.
A colleague at work uses Asda's optician for his contact lenses and tells me that he is very pleased with the service given. I know that I received an additional bonus with the discount but I do recommend Asda's optician service both for an eye test and spectacles. Both should be just right, and the price wont break the bank either.
I have rated as 9/10 as customer care and lack of choice let Asda down a little.
Advantages: Online store and instore to choose from Disadvantages: Instore was very busy because not many Asda's have instore opticians
...recently switched over to use Asda as my main opticians because I had started to order my contact lenses from the website because in my opinion they are much cheaper than buying them from most the other opticians I have used. I previously shopped instore with Specsavers, I have not had any bad experiences with them apart from the fact my monthly contact lens fee started at £13 and gradually increased to £19 within the space of 1 year, however I had ... ...bit too much. Asda online: I found the Asda opticians website very user friendly and easy to navigate around the different areas. I loved the way the special offers were easy to find on the home page. Like many other websites you were given a helping hand to find what you wanted with the 'shop by brand' or 'shop by category' sections. I was only interested in buying some contact lenses so I didn't really look at the other areas but there are sections ...

Advantages: Price, Appointment times, late night tests Disadvantages: Service overall.
...on my shopping trip to Asda in Cardiff, they were advertising same day appointments so I thought I'd pop in, do the shopping, egst the eyes done, come home and find my husband wasn't really who I thought I was marrying!
I trotted along to the optical counter and asked for an eye test, I was offered an appointment for 3 days later. I enquired if, as stated on the board outside, there was appointments available on the day and I was told 'sorry, no, ... ...These were £50. Lenses in Asda start at £25 fr normal, uncoated lenses, the more you want from your lenses, the more it costs you, but the top spec single vision lenses, which is what I have, cost no more than £50. Bi-Focal and Varifocals have a slightly different charging structure.
I was told my glasses would be ready in 5 days. I paid upfront which is an Asda requirement.
2 weeks later, allowing for the May bank holiday and weekends, I had heard ...

...the opticians at my local Asda store. The reasons for trying them were convenience and pricing. Since ASDA opened their new store in Poole, the flagship Poole Harbour store, we have done most of our shopping there, firstly because it is extremely convenient, I can see the store from my office window, just across Holes Bay from home, secondly becuase they offer much better value than their competitors, Tesco and Sainsburys.
To recount my most recent ... ...saturday morning and dropped into asda for cat food, milk, bacon and something for lunch. As I left I went to the opticians counter to book an eye test, thinking it would be sometime in the next week. The conversation went something like this:
"Hello I need to get my eyes tested"
"Good Morning sir, we can fit you in at 10 this morning."
"Good Grief! - Er, OK then, I'll just run home with my shopping and come back"
"OK, see you later."
An hour ...

Advantages: Might appear to save you money Disadvantages: No use if you cant wear what you buy........
...pleased to find out that Asda were dispensing the lens I required for specs. I have quite bad eyesight, therefore the lens can be very thick. However I was assured by the assistant that the lens could be thinned down the same as the ones I had on from my previous optician. I chose a frame and paid £350.
I picked the glasses up and the assistant fitted them for me. They appeared quite tight but I thought it was because they were just new so i persevered ... ...back as they were tight at the legs but falling forward from my face. The optician said that they were too wide and would have to be sent back, which she did.
I picked them up a week later and the assistant again attempted to fit them. I still found it hard to focus in them. I have tried again to wear them but they are causing me sever headaches and terrible pain in my sinuses. They are still VERY illfitting and uncomfortable.
I have been told ...

Quick review of Asda Opticians
Asda Trafford Park. I needed a new pair of glasses - saw a leaflet for asda opticians - 2 pairs for £165. Which is a lot cheaper than I have paid in the past... they are also super thinned.
so, eye test... £15, thorough.. appeared as good as traditional opticians.
Choice of frames.. good range.
Delivery time.. quoted 14 days, actually arrived in 4 days.
Only criticism is the finished frames weren't 'fitted' to my ears.... (i have one slightly lower than another) fortunately they are level... but sometimes they do need adjusting - depending on the frames.
Anyway.. all in all - I would definately recommend asda as an opticians. ...

back for refund or exchange (to any ASDA store)without quibble as long as you have proof of purchase. Also it contains a Music and video department, which stocks a large selection of dvds and cds. Although they used to have a very good games section, they now stock fewer games only stock the best sellers, which often, for lot's of us don't equal the best games.
Other services you may be able to get at your ASDA may be a pharmacy, photoshop, opticians, and key cutting services.
Many stores are also open 24 hours, which is extremely convenient for most people. ...

flat pack thatTesco seem to have adopted recently.
Although the store has seen better days on the outside, ASDA seem to have done their best to keep it fresh and modern on the inside, as various refits have taken place over the years.
The store however has got a bit grubby over the past year and a bit dingy- there seem to be a few blown light bulbs at this store, ASDA!
Trollies usually decide to play hard-to-get when I visit the store, and trolley workers can often be seen standing around doing something else, well, nothing.
---LOCATION OF THE STORE---
This store is situated in 'Hunts Cross Shopping Mall' probably the worst shopping centre in the world. Litterally.
There is ASDA, of course, Boots Opticians and Johnsons the cleaners. Oh and Ethel Austin clothes.
Argos recently moved out to a new location. But that is it, as ...

of the supermarkets if somewhat grotty in its appearance, presentation and quality.
More recently, Tesco has rebranded itself as a mainstream, quality retailer. The products are on a par with its competitors (the likes of Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons) and in this regard I find very little to compare in that the products themselves are generally the same (in fact, some food products in Tesco are so similar to Sainsburys equivalents it is almost obvious that they originate from the same place!).
Tesco does have a wider range of non-food items than Sainsburys, and about the same range as Asda. They have diversified into household products, toys, games, electrical items, clothes, sports goods and more. Tesco stores (like Asda) also have in-store pharmacies and opticians.
The one aspect of Tesco which I have found significantly lets it down is ...
