I went shopping last week with my other half, this is highly unusual, usually I go alone with my shopping list in hand and whip round the isles just buying the same products all the time. This time was slightly different, for a start it took twice as long because we were talking and considering different products on the way round.

Having my other half in tow can be likened to having a small child with you when shopping, he gets bored!

I sent him off to get a few products here and there that were on my list and one of them was toilet roll, I sent him to get a four pack of our usual toilet roll Asda shades. What he came back with was slightly different!

We (or should I say I) usually get the standard shades product in whatever colour comes to hand first.

My other half came back with a Shades pack but it was Shades Aroma. I had previously seen this and just thought what will they do next! He wanted to try it (see like a kid!) and so I let him have it.

He said it was the same price as the rest but that was because it is set out slightly further away from the regular version. The standard four pack is £1.56, this version is £1.66, not much difference. They work out at 41.5p each.

This is four rolls of 2-ply tissue. The wrapping says that they have an average of 220 sheets per roll. Sheets size is 125mm x 110mm with a total area of 12.1m2

The packaging is far prettier and attention grabbing than the regular shades packs, you can easily tell that it is aimed at the female shoppers because lets face it they are the main market and more likely to go for a scented product.

The plastic wrapping is for the main part clear so that the tissue itself can be seen. It has a pink scene for its background of sky fields and a few trees (see picture) with rose petals scattered in the corner. The wording on the front is very minimal, "ASDA SHADES caring for our trees and forests AROMA".

The trees and forest caring part may make you think it is recycled, oh no it isn't, this range is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and was the first toilet tissue to be certified. Yes I can hear you, what the hell does that mean? Well on the Asda blurb on this product it says that it has it's own website, what? www.asdashades.co.uk so I took a look. Well the site was one page and didn't really tell me that much. This is meant to mean that this range is as environmentally friendly as possible but what is the FSC and what differences are there?

There was a link to find out more about the FSC so I looked further. They are a international organisation that promotes "responsible stewardship of the world's forests." I didn't think there was much to gain from this site it all seems like the same thing is said in many different ways. Should you be interested take a peek www.fsc.org

Apparently this is "through air dried for cushion softness", what difference that makes I don't know! It is made from well-managed forests, controlled sources and recycled wood or fibre.

We took it home and as soon as I smelt it at home, through the plastic wrapping it was obvious that the scent was very strong and to me not that nice! I got him to sniff it and his reaction was yuck, old granny smell!

It is the regular toilet tissue but it is on a scented cardboard tube. The idea is that the scent is let off in your bathroom making it smell nice, that way you don't need a separate air freshener I suppose.

After a few days the pack was opened and the first roll was in use. The bathroom stank! The scent is meant to be of Ylang Ylang and Wild Rose. Well, to me it smelt of old fashioned perfume that old ladies wear, hence my other half saying it smelt of old grannies.

The smell is of rose but the other thing mixed into the fragrance smells to me like violets.

The toilet tissue does smell of it as it is in such close proximity to the scented card. I used it to blow my nose on one occasion and not again since as it left the smell on my nose for ages after which was far from pleasant! That said if the smell lingered on my nose surely it does on your bum, might be a good thing.

The toilet tissue itself apart from the scent I cannot say anything against, which is why I buy the regular version it is soft and absorbent and basically just as good as any brand of toilet tissue.

Neither of us have had any adverse reactions to this product *coughs* in any area. However I would not suggest those with extremely sensitive skin using it as you never know and considering where it is used a reaction would NOT be a nice thing now would it!?

Would I recommend it? No, as it stands I don't, the smell is enough to put me off completely, the idea is good the scent isn't!

Would I buy it again? No not this one but if they brought it out in a scent that was actually nice then I would give it another try.

Just because it smells so bad I am only giving this three stars, apart from smelling like old ladies the tissue itself is good.

I've never understood the point in scented toilet paper. Surely that totally contradicts toilet paper's whole purpose in the great scheme of things? -FT

I have a feeling that something like this would make me sneeze. The trouble with a scented loo roll, is that you could never get away from the scent if you didn't like it, unlike an air freshener or pot-pourri etc, which you can just remove. I think I am not going to bother with this stuff!
