I was going to write an opinion on geo physics but, since I know absolutely nothing about it, I changed my mind and wrote one on Asda instead.

I HATE SHOPPING !!!!!!! Well, that is not really true. I DID hate shopping until I discovered the beauty of Asda. This is a shop that I can get myself lost in for hours. I know it is quite sad to hear a man saying that he can spend hours in a shop (what am I saying ? My credibility has just flown out the window), but when I go into Asda I cannot resist browsing through the CD`s, magazines, books and household section (since I have recently moved into a flat and am in the middle of decorating and furnishing it). Asda has all that anyone could need in a supermarket. I can remember the days when Asda was just a foodstore (my god, I sounded like my Gran just then), but no more, oh no, Asda have expanded their range to include everything from cartons of milk to authentic Indian cuisine, music CD`s to Playstation games, tin openers to televisions and video`s, video tapes to mobile phones. The list is endless, well, not quite endless but you know what I mean. Lets just say that if I were to write a comprehensive list it would never end. No, that would mean it was endless wouldn’t it and we already established that it is not. Damn, I am confused now. Anyway, they sell a LOT !!!!

Asda was formed in 1965 by farmers from Yorkshire and to date the company now has 245 stores and 19 depots across the UK. At the moment Asda employ over 109,000 people nationwide and their store staff are known for their friendly and helpful attitude (obviously someone forgot to tell the staff at my local store of this). Over 2,800 suppliers combine to make Asda your "one stop shop" for food, alcohol, clothing, household goods, alcohol, entertainment and alcohol (you can never have too much alcohol). During the last 5 years 62 new stores have sprung up and 77 older stores have been upgraded creating 25,000 much needed new jobs for our economy. 1.8 billion pounds were invested in these projects and during the next 3 years a further 1 billion pounds will be invested in another 30 or 40 new stores. To help the environment Asda try, where possible to develop brownfield sites which account for the majority of the sites of new stores over the last 6 years. Every brownfield site benefits from around 100,000 pounds of landscaping to help blend the store into its surroundings.

On 26th July 1999 Asda became part of the Wal-Mart Group and the first Asda-Wal-Mart superstore opened in Bristol in 2000. Since then 2 others opened at Havant and Minworth with a further 7 being planned by 2006. A recent survey revealed that Asda are, on average, 11.2% cheaper than their rivals. This is good news for us Scots as we are penny pinchers (apparently), and I know I like to find a good bargain. Asda now has 8 million customers per week streaming through their doors as opposed to 6.5 million before Wal-Mart took them under its wing. Asda has been voted 'Britain's best value supermarket' by the Grocer 33 for the 4th year in succession and they have a commitment to customer service on which they spent 8 million pounds in the first quarter of this year. This helped them achieve a 50% improvement in queue lengths even though they have been attracting record numbers of customers.

The "George" fashion label was launched in 1990 by George Davies (who was the founder of the "Next" high street chain of stores). Initially George garments were only available in 5 stores nationwide but since then it has grown into a 600 million business selling goods in 215 stores. George clothing takes up 1.4 million square feet of floor space in stores across Britain. The range includes menswear, womenswear, childrenswear, footwear, schoolwear, lingerie, hosiery, swimwear and accessories. The first George Baby shop was launched in the ASDA-Wal-Mart supercentre last year, and another range, 'Essentially George', was launched in January 2001 with prices roughly 30 per cent lower than the standard range but with no reduction in quality.

In an effort to help the environment Asda have implemented the following practices: -
During building of new stores the build time is kept to a minimum to reduce any disruption.
The latest construction techniques are used to minimise the energy and raw material usage.
50% of all store waste is collected and recycled.
80% of all cardboard packaging used to transport goods is recycled.
Plans for food composting and plastic recycling are already in motion.
185 stores already have bottle banks outside for customer and local community use.
160 stores currently have paper banks for customers and local community use.
191 stores currently have can banks for customer and local community use.
43 stores currently have plastic banks for customer and local community use.
121 stores currently have textile/shoe banks for customer and local community use.
All refrigerated vehicles operated by Asda are fitted with low noise refrigeration equipment and reverse warning lights, instead of beepers, to avoid noise pollution.
All Asda staff can purchase bicycles at reduced rates for travelling back and forward to work, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
Asda are currently reducing energy use in its stores and also investing in renewable energy sources.
Asda also fund worthwhile environmental projects. These include an innovative recycling facility, a school playground built from recovered and recycled materials and an environmental education centre at the National Forest.

The “Smart Price” range of goods available in Asda is a very good, cheaper alternative, to the big name brands. With smart price peanut butter at 49p and Sun Pat peanut butter at 1.39 there is no contest. I have tried both types and there is no difference in flavour at all. The same goes for the smart price range of biscuits too. Pot noodles, pink salmon, tuna flakes, sardines etc all taste no different from the big names like John West, Kelloggs etc. Don’t just take my word for it, try them yourself, you will not be disappointed. But one word of warning, DO NOT buy smart price baked beans. They are disgusting, the sort of food you would give to your Mother in law. In fact they taste like they come ready-laced with arsenic just in case she pays an unexpected visit.

One of the things that did disappoint me about Asda however was the distinct lack of women patting their asses and saying “Asda price”. Every Asda advert features these women so where are they ?
Well, I think that by now you probably get the general idea about Asda. It is a cheap place to shop and it is also leading the way in how large corporations should treat their surroundings and local communities. It is a pity that more companies do not react in the same way to ecological changes. I will continue to shop in Asda (unless they put the prices of beer up) as I find that I can do my shopping and actually enjoy it. I regularly find myself getting so carried away with looking at things and just generally browsing that when I get home I discover that I have bought food that I already have plenty of. I currently have a cupboard, which is full of tins, 24 of them are soups and I don’t eat soup very often. Anyway, next time you go shopping you could do a lot worse then taking a look at what your local Asda can offer you. I do not think you will be disappointed.

Thanks for toughing it out till the end of this op.........hello.......is there anybody there ?????

A very detailed, excellent review. I liked the humourous comments, which lightened the tone in such a long review. Very well done.
