I only use Asda for non food shopping, for food I usually use Tesco & on some occasions Sainsbury's. My local Asda (with the Wal-Mart name above the door) is a two storey monster of a store with a matching two storey car park next door. The lower section is dedicated to food & an escalator takes you & your trolley (yes, really!) up to the non food section. This particular store recorded over 170.000 people through its doors in the first week of trading, breaking the UK record at the time.
When it comes to non-food items, this is where Asda excels, they sell budget brands & famous brands, something for everyone & very competitively priced too. Looking for a camera, they have unknown budget brands for little money & more famous names like Sony, Nikon or Canon if you want to spend a little more. They have a huge selection of DVDs & CDs for all the family & out price HMV & Virgin music stores. I paid £7.00 for the latest James Bond DVD on the day it was released from Asda when the RRP was over £20.00, and to think they made money from that £7.00!!
I hate spending a lot of money on work clothes so I often visit Asda for shirts & footwear. So you are reading this thinking well you'll only get what you pay for when it comes to cheap clothes. Well, my partner purchased a shirt for me from John Lewis for £45.00, after it had been washed twice it started to wrinkle & the threads stared coming out of the sleeves & a button fell off. I bought four number of plain white shirts for work from Asda for £3.00 each in early 2005; they get washed weekly & are still looking as good today as they were when purchased. No wrinkled cloth no buttons fallen off or threads out of place. On anther occasion I paid £45.00 for a pair of shoes from Next, within 12 months the soles wore out which cost me £20.00 to have them resoled. I paid £14.00 for a pair of shoes from Asda (cheaper than a resole) & two years on they are still in great condition. My partner bought a coat from Next for £80.00 with the Next label attached, two weeks later in Asda with her coat on; she found exactly the same cost (repeat, exactly the same coat) with a George label for £40.00!!! I recently bought a two piece suit from Asda for work that can be washed in a washing machine for £50.00; it doesn't look cheap (although I probably do!!) & it fits perfectly, best of all I save a fortune on dry cleaning bills.
Outdoor summer gear is even cheaper than B&Q & children's toys are incredible value for money. The staff are helpful; there is never a problem when you take things back & best of all its open 24 hours a day. My only gripe is the check outs are painfully slow; they should take a leaf out of Tesco's book. Don't put off by the value image, have a look at Asda sometime & save a fortune as well.

Advantages: Great prices, helpful staff and wide selection of products Disadvantages: Drivers who abuse the disabled and parent & child parking places !
