I picked up the package to discover it was ASDA's own make, the little plastic pots were translucent whilst the covers were very basic with just enough essential info on them for me to make a decision………………who am I kidding the decision had already been made I was having them. In fact at 48p for four I was having eight.
Crème Caramel is a rich custard dessert with a soft caramel topping. The topping is actually quite runny so that when released from the mould is runs down the side lightly coating the custard dessert. The pot were less than 3 inches high and just over 2 inches wide at the base which is the top of the dessert. The top of the pot or bottom of the dessert is rather larger than it's opposite end causing a nice cup shape.
To facilitate easy release of the sweet from its mould there is a small silver tab on the bottom of the mould. Lifting and pulling this to remove it reveals a small hole which then allows air into the mould and hence when placed upside down on the serving dish causes the dessert to fall delicately onto the dish. As I watched the runny caramel run down the sides my mouth was watering. It was but a few seconds later that I sampled this very cheap dessert.
My first mouthful felt quite cold and the caramel had a hint of bitterness, the custard was kind of bland being that there really wasn't that much taste to it at all, its hard to describe, it was very smooth and there was an ever so slight taste of vanilla which was only evident every now and then. The caramel however did add that little bit of zing to the whole dessert for a miserly 12p each are good value for money. It was the dark rich caramel that definitely stole the show with its bitter sweetness.
Advantages: very cheap; can be 'jazzed up' low fat and calorie pud Disadvantages: Bit bland, mushy and watery
...fat squirty creme, or indeed, Asda Smart price ready to eat tinned custard (see my review) this was make a really cheap, low calorie and fat pudding. The caramel sauce makes up 5% of the product, the third ingredient after 'Partially Skimmed Milk and ''Sugar'. The vanilla comes towards the bottom of the ingredients list and is only a 'flavouring' as opposed to 'essense' hence the lack of vanilla taste. There are no artificial colour or preservatives. ... ...more to buy a proper Asda brand of creme caramels and hope fora better flavour. I looked at the ingredients for the proper Asda brand at 64p and I am guessing it would be a bit thicker as it uses 'skimmed milk' and 'cream' and perhaps a tad more flavoursome due to 'natural vanilla flavouring'. There are only 101kcal and 1g of fat per pot of this type so it's worth upping the content for a better tasting product.
This could act as a basis and I suppose, ...
