WHITE goes with EVERYTHING! Unless, of course, you have a Colour-Coordinated Kitchen, with all your Appliances Chrome, or Dark Green or some other colour.

Why Did I Need A Kettle?

All I have ever really wanted in a kettle was an appliance which would boil water for me. Our first kettle after we got married nearly thirty five years ago was a squat round chrome coloured kettle. It was heavy and awkward to fill and pour. It also did not turn itself off, so you had to watch it didn't boil dry. Not many years passed before it was starting to leak around the seams and the lid was hard to lift up. I replaced it with a lighter plastic kettle which turned itself off when it was boiled, but it still was not cordless. Eventually, the plastic kettle became brittle, and started to leak around the clear plastic level indicator. I knew it was dangerous, but we taped around the kettle with 'Gaffer' tape to keep it from leaking as we couldn't afford to buy a new kettle.

To my surprise, when visiting our local Asda store, I saw that their cut price line of goods now included a cordless kettle! At under £5 (in fact, £4.28) it was so cheap that I didn't even hesitate to put it into my shopping trolley and purchase it along with my shopping. No more leaky kettle, and no more getting tangled in the cord while trying to pour the kettle. Now all I would have to do was to lift the kettle off its base to carry it anywhere in the room I needed to pour the water. The cord attached to the base was short (about half a metre?), reaching to the socket but without letting the base get dangerously close to the counter edge, so it was just right for me. The kettle has a clear blue plastic panel on the side which indicates the water level, from a minimum (with the water just covering the element) to a maximum level of 1.7 ltrs, which is a pretty much standard volume for a kettle these days. It is also not quite just white as it has several light green soft ridges on the handle to help your grip. I like this colour, as it makes me feel more secure and peaceful.

I was able to throw away the cracked kettle when I got home, and started using the new one straight away. There was only a small instruction sheet in the box, but it had the safety instructions and recommended boiling fresh water in the kettle (to remove any manufacturing residue) and discarding it before using any water to drink. For the first few days, the water tasted a little bit like plastic, but ever since then the water has tasted fine.

My Husband Has No Complaints.
He likes using this kettle. He usually fills my flasks with boiling water for me before he goes to work in the morning as some days I have difficulties using the taps due to my arthritis, and he says it is easy to fill, as the top opens up wide (or he sometimes just fills it through the spout). I can fill it easily with the lid lifted, but I do not lose the lid because it is hinged. You can also hear the lid click into place when it is properly closed. The kettle sits easily on its stand and is not too noisy while it is boiling, although I can usually tell when it is about to boil because the tone changes. It takes about two or three minutes to boil the water in a full kettle, depending on how cold the water comes in from the mains supply.

The kettle is lightweight and balances well. Some kettles I have used or had seem to want to tip, or dribble out of the edges of their spouts when you try to pour too quickly, but this one seems to suit me better. The filter in the spout has not become scaled up in the several (maybe four or five years?) we have had it, and any scaling (roughness) on the inside of the kettle I just use a washing-up brush to brush away and then rinse with fresh water. Scaling does depend on your water supply, so it might be different for someone in a high limestone area, but as it is plastic rather than metal you do not need to use a special descaler.

We have not needed to have any repairs, under warranty or otherwise, and it hasn't complained when my husband overfills it (even though I warn him to be careful). It is easy to grip and I have never dropped it like I occasionally used to drop the chrome kettle because it was awkward and my hands do not always grip well. The plug is fused and molded onto the wire, so it has excellent safety.

All in All, this is a great kettle! and not just for the price!

I would buy another kettle, even at the current increased price of £5.49 (as at 12-12-2011), if I needed one or if I was to want to give one as a gift.
Recommended.

Review summary

for the review "This Kettle May Not Look That Smart . . . but it's a SMART PRICE"
The Asda SmartPrice Kettle is a good value. It is cordless, displaying the water level on both sides through a translucent panels, boils the water quickly, and then turns itself off when ready. It is easy to fill and pour, is lightweight and well balanced. I have needed no repairs in the several years I have owned it and can recommend it as a basic, budget, white plastic kettle.
