Having read quite a few recent opinions on the runny red stuff that we like to put on our dinner plates alongside chips and the usual ‘junk’ food I thought I’d rise to the challenge to see what I could actually find to write about my newly acquired bottle from Asda.

I am in fact talking about Tomato Ketchup and the bottle, which I am about to describe, came from my first trip around the new Asda store near Leyton where my fiancé and I visited last Saturday.

[ The Bottle ]
The bottle is the standard shape made of clear glass with one of those typical gunge collecting white screw top lids (ugh) and holds an average of 570g of the lovely stuff.

It has a basic white label wrapped around it with Asda Smartprice Tomato Ketchup written on the front and all the blurb (ingredients and food facts) to either side and last but not least a large V pictured with a leaf, which I can only guess means suitable for vegetarians as there is no explanation alongside it and not being a vegetarian personally I wouldn’t know if this is a commonly used symbol.

[ The Ingredients ]
OK are you ready… Tomatoes (no really?) – 102g per 100g ketchup actually. Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Citric Acid, Spices, Onion Extract and surprisingly enough for a cheap bottle no colours or preservatives.

[ Storage Details ]
It is best to store this product in a cool dark place and keep in the fridge once opened. You are also advised to consume within 8 weeks once you have opened the bottle… which if you have children should be no problem, as with our household the kids use half a bottle each per meal, lol, so for it to last 8 weeks is a joke!

[ Food Facts ]
For those who might be interested the following are the food facts on this product given that they state the average serving is 10g.

Energy – 12 Cals
Protein – 0.1g
Carbohydrate – 2.9g (of which sugars) – 2.6g
Fat – Trace (of which saturates) – Trace
Fibre – 0.1g
Sodium – 0.1g
Trace Fat – 12 calories
Approx’ 0.3 Salt

[ Price ]
A mere 30p!! Absolute bargain.

[ Money Back Guarantee ]
As with most shops Asda also say that if you try this product and are dissatisfied with it, then you can return if for a full refund. Their slogan is ‘Try me! You’ll love me, or your money back’.

[ Performance ]
Give a little shake and then after removing the perforated plastic seal around the lid aim towards required target and go for it. I have found that this ketchup is more than willing to greet any sort of dinner without hesitation whether it be beans on toast or burnt burgers and chips as a result of the chef being ignorant to the fact that dinner was cooked and was on the verge of burning when she decided to read just one more opinion on Ciao lol (only kidding, but do you believe me?).

Being that it is quite runny you have to be careful not to overdo it though otherwise it will be more a case of ‘would you like some dinner with your ketchup’? And not the other way around.

[ Smell and Taste ]
Admittedly it doesn’t smell like Heinz, if anything a little sweeter but it isn’t offensive and certainly not sickly… it just smells like… well… sauce!

Since I can’t really remember the last time I had Heinz ketchup (oh please put the violins away), I can only say that it tastes great and the fact that my daughter and 3 step-children love it too is a good sign that it’s not cheap and nasty, but cheap and tasty, but then again they all eat my home cooking so they can’t be fussy!! Bless them all.

[ Conclusion ]
Well, as so many of the ketchup op’s have ended up, I too agree that it really doesn’t matter whether you break the bank for a bottle of branded ketchup or go for the stores own cheapie brand, they all more or less taste the same and achieve pleasant results when one dunks ones chips! And with kids around who can afford to get 8 bottles of Heinz a week lol.
