I have recently discovered the previously unknown delights of sobriety. I hear the cries of “Oh No!” from the brewing industry and the Chancellor of the Exchequer is re-writing his April budget as I write.
Fear not the breweries and Hostelries of West Yorkshire, this is a temporary set-back due to being confined to quarters due to an ongoing medical condition that I will not bore you with here. I will do that in the form of another review. You don’t escape that lightly!
Due to this enforced situation I no longer jump off the bus on my way home from work and call at my local but now enjoy a couple of medicinal drinks in the house.
I have also discovered the delights of reasonably priced wines other than Lambrusco, Lambrini or Thunderbirds. I am now drinking to enjoy rather than get drunk. Strange but true.
I couldn’t make it to Sainsbury’s for my usual tipple, so I asked my sister if she would get me a bottle of Spanish Sweet White Wine from our local Asda. The chap at the wines and spirits counter recommended Asda’s own ‘Moscatel De Valencia Denominacion De Origen’ at £3.27 for a 75cl bottle. The man deserves a bonus!
It is described on the label as “A distinctively smooth and lusciously honeyed sweet white wine with a very attractive full fruit character.” Not half, as Alan Freeman (Fluff to us oldies) used to say.
The wine comes in a clear white bottle with a screw cap. This may come in handy as you may not want to drink the full bottle at one sitting; it is 15% ABV (alcohol by volume) and is 1.9 units of alcohol for a standard 125ml glass.
Taste wise this has to be the sweetest wine that I have sampled in my short career, not to mention the strongest. The description on the label does it justice; you can actually smell the fruit as you open the bottle.
This is an exceptionally strong, smooth white wine that, once again, should be avoided if it your turn to drive and enjoyed if it isn’t!
Please take note that this is serious falling down juice. Even I, a seasoned drinker of high tolerance threshold, refused to polish off the bottle in one go. Which goes to show … there is a first time for everything!
I would recommend this wine to any wine lover or any one who just wants to have something to accompany a meal. The label recommends to serve it as a dessert wine or as an aperitif?!? The choice is yours.
