I bought this on whim when I was recently stocking up on books for my daily commute. I had no idea that Ethan Hawke was now writing books but was swayed by the cover art and blurb and was intrigued to see the kind of work he was putting out. Pretty thin reasons for buying a book but there you go. Here's what I thought.
As an actor Hawke has been around for many years now, first coming to prominence in the saccharine ... ...that time he has appeared in many Hollywood films of varying quality but has managed to build himself a solid reputation as a semi-serious thesp. As an author he published his first novel, 'The Hottest State', in the late nineties and followed it several years later with 'Ash Wednesday'. Well, so you're gonna try your hand at writing novels eh, actor boy???
Well it gives me great pleasure to say that this attempt is....not half bad as it happens!
The novel is basically a love story between Jimmy Heartsock and his beau, who are beset by various trials and tribulations on their journey through the pages towards the story's finale. I wont summarise any further, you'll just have to read it.
Now, leaving the (very crude) Dickensian ... ...fresh and immediate, moving, gentle and evocative. Its emotional and rewards reading and rereading, much as it pains me to say it, for i am no fan of the Hollywood set.
When i say immediate, think of Bukowski, probably the greatest single writer in modern U.S. fiction (controversial there but i'll stick my neck out). Buk is certainly a great influence on Hawke here, but i really dont think that is such a bad thing. If you like your writers to give ...
