Review of "Ash vs Evil Dead (DVD)"
I will only rate one review, per person, per day. It's only fair and allows me to share the love!
The trilogy of Evil Dead films by Sam Raimi, are cult classics and made a star of it's main star, Bruce Campbell. When they decided to continue the story in a TV series, called Ash vs Evil Dead, the news was well received by Evil Dead fans, but could they really recreate the charm, scares and humour that made the films so successful.Ash vs Evil Dead is set 30 years after the events of the three Evil Dead film. Ash Williams has a dead end job as a salesclerk at the ValueShop mart. He lives in a trailer, regularly drinks in bars and engages in occasional sex. It is fair to say his life has gone nowhere since defeating the Deadites all those years ago. However, after inadvertently reading the incarnation from the Book of Dead again, he unleashes the Deadites on to the world again. Despite his initial reluctance, he is drawn into the battle against the evil Deadites once again. This time, he has two companions to help, with Pablo Simon Bolivar, a co-worker at the ValueShop mart and Kelly Maxwell, a woman trying to outrun her past. The trio of Deadite slayers are pursued by State Trooper, Amanda Fisher and Ruby Knowby, who blames Ash for the death of her father, Professor Raymond Knowby and sister Annie Knowby (who died in the Evil Dead films). Will Ash be able to defeat the Deadites one more time or will it prove too much for the washed up hero?
I thought that this was an excellent series, which stays true to the movies which spawned it. This series perfectly manages to capture the charm and appeal which made the Evil Dead films so popular. It is great mix of gory scares. and hilarious laughs as Ash and his friends fight the Deadites. This series is fast paced and uses great direction to bring alive the wild and frantic nature of the battle between good and evil. Drafting in Sam Raimi, who wrote and directed the films, to direct the first episode was very fitting. The special effects and stunt sequences are brilliant and hep to make this an exciting and action packed series. It is good to see many elements from the Evil Dead films, appearing in this TV series, which helps with continuity. The horror may be a bit graphic for some people but under the circumstances of it being a horror series, I think it is very appropriate. This series was developed for the Starz network and their faith in the series was further demonstrated when they renewed it for a second season before this first season even aired on TV. It is a exhilarating journey as Ash comes must face the evil Deadites again.Bruce Campbell is excellent as Ash Williams, the washed up hero, who must once again battle the evil Deadites. Campbell perfectly brings alive the character of Ash, a ladies man, who lies to the ladies and is under the false impression, that he can bed any woman. The character of Ash is emotionally stunted and still suffering from the trauma of his experience in the Evil Dead films, but when it comes to the crunch moments in a fight, he is the man you want by your side, especially with his chainsaw arm. I can't imagine anyone else portraying Ash better than Campbell does, it is a joy to watch. I thought that Ray Santiago does well as Ash's co-worker and companion, Pablo SImon Bolivar, who despite his initial fears, proves to be a valuable ally to Ash. I'm not familiar with Bolivar, as an actor, but he is good in his role in this TV series. Dana DeLoreno is also good as fellow companion Kelly Maxwell, who due to personal circumstances, is dragged into Ash's fight. This series also features Lucy Lawless and Jill Marie Jones as Ruby Knowby and Amanda Fisher, respectively.
Ash vs Evil Dead is a gory, hilarious, and audacious resurrection of the popular film series, which you can't help but love. I highly recommend this TV series to everyone.
