In the constant quest for "something different" ice cream wise, I found these little beauties hidden amongst the jellies and instant whips at my local Asda store.
The product I will now review are "Askeys party cones".
~~~~~~ THE PACKAGING ~~~~~~
These come in a large rectangular box, blue and bright green in colour, on the front is the "askeys" brand name at the top over looking the product name. The title simply states "21 party cones", the 21 and the cones part of the text is a cream colour but the party part is in vivid and eye catching colours. In the right hand corner there is a cartoon clown eating one of the party cones filled with strawberry ice cream and a small starfish with a wand ,and the statement underneath reading "create a little magic!" Finally there is a small oval cut-out in the right hand corner to show one of the packs of cones and to reiterate the fact that these are now foil packed for freshness.
~~~~~~ THE CONTENTS ~~~~~~
On opening the box you will see there are three foil cylinders of cones, these each contain seven cones a piece, this is a much better idea than having a singular bag, as the cones tend to soften up after a couple of days, this way there is less wastage. As these were bought for my children they are both hanging around at this point, waiting to see what the cones actually look like. I rip open the foil packet, very easily, and remove a cone, (they are designed to slot together, and so protecting the handle of the cornet within the next cone), the first thing that strikes me is the colour scheme. There are vivid red, green, yellow and blue stripes running from the base up to the cup part of the cone, aside from that fact they look no different from bog standard ice cream cones.
~~~~~~ THE TASTE ~~~~~~
I have always thought that cornets have a cardboard taste and texture to them, the sweetness that is noticeable I find is derived from the filling. This does not make them unpleasant, the opposite in fact, who wants something that is going to steal the thunder of your favourite ice cream flavour. This tastes exactly the same as normal cornets, I did think the stripes may have added a little something different but was mistaken.
~~~~~~ NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION ~~~~~~
Per cornet these contain - 13 kcal 0.4g protein 2.6g carbohydrate Less than 0.1g of fat
That makes these absolutely no weight watchers points, I have to be honest I was surprised, delighted and somewhat excited by this fact until my darling daughter pointed out that, that was without any ice cream in them, which defeats the whole point really doesn't it! The list of ingredients include - wheat flour, raising agent, vegetable oil, milk, salt, sugar and sweetener, the more slightly concerning fact are the five different "E" numbers in this product, I can only assume these are present solely because of the colour stripes, but worth being aware of for the slightly more hyperactive children, wouldn't want to recommend these to you, then five minutes after you have given them to your children, your having to peel them off the ceiling, I can't imagine the messages I would receive from your good self's! Also worth noting is the fact that these are suitable for vegetarians but not for people with allergies against gluten, Soya or milk proteins.
~~~~~~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~~~~~~
I had not noticed these before, I truly thought they were a new product, but according to my mum they have been around for a few years now. As I mentioned before these were purchased from Asda for the price of 99p, not sure if it was a special offer, as the prices fluctuate so quickly in Asda nowadays, but that's a review in itself!
~~~~~~ FAVOURITES ~~~~~~~
I have been to parties as a youngster where the host, (ie my mates mum!), has filled the cornet handle with small diced fruit then topped with ice cream. I even went to one party where the handle has been filled with pre prepared jelly, the fact the host failed to tell us that little fact in advance only added to the enjoyment and of course added to the severity of the mess in the carpet. My favourite way of eating these is to get as much ice cream into the cone as possible, intermitten with chocolate sauce and squirty cream, it has to be squirty cream and not pouring cream as it obviously freezes to the ice cream, then finally a final flourish of strawberry sauce and a handful of sprinkles, preferably hundreds and thousands. Then I bite the bottom off the cone and literally suck the ice cream out, I know, sounds an arse backwards way of doing it, but hey ho! As a green and ecological alternative to party bags you could fill a cornet with small sweets for the homeward bound party guests, so when the sweets have been finished they can just eat the cone, so as removing the left over plastic bag. We will be doing this for my daughters 7th birthday party, which this year is beach themed!
~~~~~~ CONCLUSION ~~~~~~
These are a visually enticing product that I do recommend, even though the cone tastes no different, the wow factor makes up for that, or at least my kids think so!
Advantages: Comes in Lots of Varieties Disadvantages: Food colouring gets on hands
...a metal scoop and some Askeys cones. It is these that I will now review. The shelves were full of this type of product however the reason that I chose Askeys cones was due to the fact that my son liked the picture of the funny face on the front of the box and the rather appetising looking picture of a strawberry ice-cream cone on the front. He I have to say thought that this is what was inside the box ice-cream and all!!! In addition the outer packaging ... ...a super taste. Askeys as a company actually make several different types of cone and due to the messy hands on these occasions I think that I will probably purchase one of their different versions (dye-free) next time round. They make plain cornets, cup cornets with flat bottoms which wont fall over probably more suited to younger children and ice-cream wafers to make your very own ice-cream sandwich if you so desire. Definitely something to suit ...
