I love this time of year, the weather usually improves and we finally get a little bit of sunshine. In addition a bored six year old can finally get outside and play in the garden. Usually however he invites the entire street to come and play with him also which inevitably means that I end up spending a fortune on buying ice lollies and ice-cream cones for them all. I was shopping in my local Morrison's and decided that to save myself a fortune this year that I would invest in a rather large tub of ice-cream, a metal scoop and some Askeys cones. It is these that I will now review.
The shelves were full of this type of product however the reason that I chose Askeys cones was due to the fact that my son liked the picture of the funny face on the front of the box and the rather appetising looking picture of a strawberry ice-cream cone on the front. He I have to say thought that this is what was inside the box ice-cream and all!!! In addition the outer packaging contains the company logo and the wording "create a little magic". The colours on the box are predominantly navy blue and green. There is a small air vent too which also serves to keep the product fresh. The box I picked up was the party coronets variety containing 21 cones inside costing £1.20. Upon opening the packaging the products within were wrapped in foil. There were three separate packets each with seven cones inside. I thought that this was a great idea as it would help to keep the unused cones from going soft too quickly and keep them fresher for longer.
The cones themselves looked like standard wafer cones; however there was multi-coloured food dye on each one in red yellow and green vertical stripes. They thankfully were quite substantially made if you can say that for a wafer as little boys tend to be quite rough. The cones themselves were quite sweet however generally very pleasant tasting. They were also very crunchy. I would also recommend that they be eaten outside as there were a lot of crumbs. They seemed to take a lot of punishment as well from dripping ice-cream melted by the sun which prevented the cone from going to soggy to quickly. The draw-back however was the multi-coloured hands that presented themselves to me ten minutes after consumption!!! I would definitely recommend these for the novelty factor and a super taste.
Askeys as a company actually make several different types of cone and due to the messy hands on these occasions I think that I will probably purchase one of their different versions (dye-free) next time round. They make plain cornets, cup cornets with flat bottoms which wont fall over probably more suited to younger children and ice-cream wafers to make your very own ice-cream sandwich if you so desire. Definitely something to suit all occasions and ages.
The cones themselves are suitable for vegetarians; they contain artificial sweeteners, gluten, and Soya and milk proteins.

Sound good for those who like cones. I only like ice-cream in a 99'er' cone where I can push the flake down the cone. Prefer a bowl heaped full of ice-cream topped with strega. Good review :-) Just the weather for it!
