The ASUS EEE PC 701 model is an extremely affordable, small and portable netbook with a 7" screen and built in wifi card designed primarily for internet use. The standard model comes with a built in 2 gigabyte solid statehard drive and comes in a variety of colours and finishes ranging from matt white through to pastel pink. The white ones are probably your best bet as in my opinion they are slightly more stylish, echoing shades of the Macbook Air. The EEE PC comes with a built in microphone on all models and webcam on most models and runs on a Linux based operating system although it can be configured to run on a Windows based system. Windows based versions are planned for release by the company shortly. The Linux distribution is extremely stable with a Windows like user interface although for those not quite used to Linux you may have difficulties downloading and installing things as there are differences. Also it is quite likely there will be some compatibility issues when running apps and things as not all programs, games etc have a Linux version yet.
As for surfing speed the ASUS is pretty fast depending on your wireless connection and copes well with most websites although the small screen can make your eyes ache after a while. It can stream video content without any trouble and even run a few fairly low spec games although don't expect it to be able to cope with the latest Call Of Duty release!!!
It can run word processing apps and spreadsheet software so perfect if you need to take your work with you and is also ideal for racing through your inbox on the move.
Mouse control can be a little tricky to get used to with a touch sensitive pad but you can always use a laptop mouse if this troubles you too much.
Overall the ASUS EEE PC is an excellent buy if you need true portability and access to the internet on the move at a very attractive price, the standard model now retails at under £200.
