...This is what the weekly athletics bible consists of....
News and News Briefs
If anything has happened remotely important or of significance within UK or world athletics, it will be found here. At the moment there is much news concerned with the build up to Edmonton (World Champs). There is a great diversity in this section, from that of the news on stars to team selection, new stadia, coaches, deaths, hairstyles, reports on ... ...stand out from any other athletics magazine. It has the most comprehensive and up to date results section. If a race occurs (assuming the results have been sent in) then they will appear. The standards are quite high... so if you come 50th in your local 10k...don't expect to get your name in print!!! For some sad reason ...all athletes seem to love checking their position and time here every week. Cool!!!
This magazine really is the best thing since sliced bread for me. I sit by the door on a Wednesday morning.... bark loudly when the posty comes...and wrench the post out of his hands with my teeth when he sticks it through the letterbox!!! I am not sure what i would do without my weekly dose of results, news and views. This magazine is not your normal run of the mill 'joe joggers' monthly, but instead a collaboration of the finest reports, interviews and in-depth analysis for track, field, road, cross country (& for some reason race walking!).

News and News Briefs If anything has happened remotely important or of significance within UK or world athletics, it will be found here. At the moment there is much news concerned with the build up to Edmonton (World Champs). There is a great diversity in this section, from that of the news on stars to team selection, new stadia, coaches, deaths, hairstyles, reports on governing bodies...etc. You name something- it will be there. Articles are often the perfect length, ranging from a four inch column to a whole page spread for articles that are deemed more important.
News Focus This is more often than not a two page spread on an important decision within athletics, new record breakers (this week it was all about Sebrle's 9000 point decathlon record), or really any event or story that is going to affect the sport dramatically. Recent topics have been the new national stadium at Pickets Lock, as well as factfiles of stars.
Area Round up This does what it says on the tin. Each week an area is picked (South/Midlands/North) rounding up team news, particular athlete achievements, events, co-ordination etc.
Rising Stars When i was a youngster i always dreamed of getting into this section...but have never even been near!!! Profiles of talented youngsters can be found here along with news of their fitness, or if they are basically interesting people or not! The nice thing is...if you have grown up around the sport (even if you are not a class athlete) this is a section that one can relate to. Many of the youngsters that appear, are real 'club athletes'. By this i mean they run regularly in the leagues, champ races and open meets. Therefore they are known people...quite often the kind of people you meet, race against and talk to! This used to give me a little hope!!!
Meet The Club This is a new section that is not always included. Insead of focusing on large, successful clubs- smaller ones are profiled. This is quite a good idea as it introduces you to info and history on a club that one may not of heard of. Alternatively, it is possible that you will sy " oh ....yeh...i came across thsi club when i ran in the....". A very good idea in my op. My club is going to be focused on soon (The Vale Of Aylesbury). Nice one!!!
Exclusive Interview A large interview often with a medal/ex medal winner, or those that show promise for one in a major champs. This week the interview was with Jo Fenn (one of our young, talented 800m gals).
Your Say This is the dreaded letter section- the only part of the magazine that really gets on my wick. Whilst some articles are worse than boring, the others are really annoying. I just want to write in and say.... But hey...thats the idea! Unlike the joe jogger monthlies this section is opinion based, rather than people writing in saying "i am a busy mother etc ...can you suggest a training schedule". Few... only athlete based works!
Major Meet Round Up This is a review of the weeks major meeting (performances etc). More often than not it will focus on a champs or the British Men's/Women's league div 1 matches. This is 'the main event' for league meetings. One will find the most successful clubs, best results etc to look up to & use as a standard here.
Finally ...The Results and Whats On Section This is the part that makes A.W stand out from any other athletics magazine. Cool!!!
So for a lengthy well informed read, with the editors final word at the end " Wards Word"... to put the cat amongst the pigeons, one can have a superb start to their Wednesday. If you are a regular competition athlete...you will already get this. If not stick to you joe joggers monthly mags.
*****UPDATED*****
I just can't believe that i forgot to mention that our very own Flashpointz takes many photographs for this top mag. Be it English Schools, Southern Champs, or even local international meets on his doorstep!- Keith will be there rain or shine. No wonder there are so many great snaps of women in action!!! I just wonder if he is so enthusiastic when it comes to the cross-country season. TTFN. Tom.
Advantages: Gives sports outside the mainstream the coverage they need Disadvantages: Sports round up format can appear out of date
A long running programme on Channel 4 since the late 1980s, it would be easy to dismiss TransWorld Sport as another one of those sports programmes to fill the air time in the early morning schedules. For my generation, It isn't that fashionable to watch either. When I watched it on a regular basis a few years ago (in the mid to late 1990s), I should have been watching the Ninja Turtles or Round the Twist. Now it's on at a time when I should be lying in, an option I often take up.
Not that TransWorld Sport is particularly bad or lacks appeal. Providing a round up of the global sports news from the previous week plus features of sports and athletes on the fringes of the mainstream, the format seems very simplistic now, but when you consider that this was devised before the advent of Sky Sports News and the Internet, it was arguably ahead ...
Advantages: OK if you like Football and Rugby Disadvantages: If you like any other sports, forget it basically!
and the Commonwealth Games have borrowed the Grandstand banner. One can only hope that this trend continues.
Sadly, this is one viewer who thinks no. The first test will be April 14 2007 when the Beeb Outside Broadcast unit sets up at Aintree. Grand National Grandstand was a special Saturday, even more so in 1997 when the sports magazine graduated into a news programme. If it is simply Racing from Aintree or Grand National, we will know the Beebs intended plan next year in Beijing.
Other major events have not used the Grandstand banner and have not really been affected by doing so. For example, Wimbledon during the week, World Athletics Championships and The Open Golf.
The time has come, not to lounge in sports kit but to don ones black suit and tie. Grandstand is being laid to rest. Let's hope that the final programme reflects its influence ...

Advantages: Very cool!! Disadvantages: Its only on 24 hours a day!!
of the strangest sports reporting I've ever heard from two "old" blokes called Roy and HG (aka Rampaging Roy Slavin and HG Nelson) - these guys did a very irreverant TV show during the Sydney Olympics and I've recently seen a video of the two weeks - it is very funny stuff and all the athletes that appear on the show comment that it gained a cult following during the Games.
I used to listen to Capital FM but since discovering JJJ I've never looked back - try it out - you'll love it. They have feeds in both Real Player and Windows Media Player so everyone should be able to listen... the feeds seem very reliable.
Another great thing about JJJ is that the ABC website is right upto date, very slick in design and has information about every aspect of the stations operations - there is many a commercial station out there who could learn a lesson from ...
