Au Pair

As some of you know, I left France by the end of September to be an au pair in England. I must say that I was over excited by the idea of spending a school year in a country whose language has been a real passion for me for almost a decade ! Au pair ?… non merci !

Advantages: it's relatively easy to find a host family
Disadvantages: you don't know where you're landing

I had decided to look for an au pair family on the internet, although some people had told me that there were agencies dealing with this kind of jobs. I had found two reasons (which I thought were good enough) not to use the services of an agency ...
...plenty of them… Their former au pair had left the day before… honestly, I thought she had done the work. The mom reproached this to me saying that I wasn’t helping her much and that if I didn’t want to do it I’d have to let her know so that they organise a different way… if you had had somebody talk to you the way she did, I bet you would have answered something… I didn’t, I had not expected to be spoken this way… I just swallowed her words and didn’t ... more

Au Pair? Oh, Pain

Advantages: A chance to see the world and get paid for it
Disadvantages: Long hours for relatively low pay

...lives of a handful of au pairs in various countries. Not meaning to be horrid, but most of them were appalling. The only one who looked like she was doing her best looking after the children, and trying to fit in to life in a new country was called Zoë. Perhaps it was as a sign. I had no particular desire to be an au pair. I realized I would probably be a better one than most of the girls featured in the program, but that wouldn’t be hard. ...
...time, my choices were limited. Au pairing was one option, and I had the experience and skills for it, so I did some research and applied to a few agencies. I couldn’t go with the best ones as they have qualification and age requirements I didn’t meet, but a few of the others seemed interested. If you’re thinking about going for a long time and / or have never traveled alone, I would recommend that you do it properly: start ages ...

Modern and Useful

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

I graduated from salford University in 1996 after completing a four year course in Modern Languages (French and Spanish). I chose salford University as the course was a very modern course - unlike the tradtional courses of places such as Oxbridge where literature is the main basis of many parts of the course. During my time at Salford, I learned much about translation and interpretation and also spent a year abroad. The first six months I spent in Granada, Spain, as an au pair and then the University found me a job as a secretary in France for my second stint. I would truly recommend Salford if you want to go somewhere with a modern and practical outlook to courses. ...

The World's Best Job?

Advantages: You get paid to travel the world, and it's a pretty secure job - even now, there's still demand
Disadvantages: I have an all over the place schedule unlike a "proper" job

No, that would be caretaker of a tropical island off the coast of Queensland, a topic I just taught a class on, but this one?s pretty close. ESCAPING THE RAT RACE There are two main breeds of EFL instructors: those who are professional teachers and those who are anything but. People often decide to spend a year or two teaching either before starting their career, or as a break after a few years of ?proper? work. Why teaching? Quite simply because it is one of the easiest jobs to find abroad, since you don?t usually need to speak the local language, and visas are granted without much fuss since you?re legitimately bringing a skill lacking in the local population, namely being a native English speaker. Teaching is not my first venture abroad ? I?ve been everything from an au pair to a holiday rep to a software developer to ...
