The Audi 80 is a lovely car to drive with a responsive 1.8 litre engine and a gearbox that is a joy to use. To read the motoring press sometimes you would think the only thing which makes a car excellent is a little badge that says ‘Made In Germany’. They would have you believe that the best sports car are Porsches, the best saloons are Mercedes, the best small cars are Volkswagens and the best designed and engineered cars would have to be Audis. The question is ; is this reputation justified? On the basis of my experience with an Audi 80 I would have to agree. Of all the company cars I have had this has been the best.
The question is ; is this reputation justified? On the basis of my experience with an 1992 Audi 80 I would have to agree. Of all the company cars I have had this has been the best. As I drive about 40 to 50,000 miles per year I am in a position to judge a car pretty quickly. When you spend this long in a car you soon get to know whether you like it or not. I had the Audi 80 for over 2 years and did over 102,000 miles in it.
The Audi 80 is a lovely car to drive with a responsive 1.8 litre engine and a gearbox that is a joy to use. The ride is on the firm side of comfortable and consequently gives superb handling on more winding stretches of road. The car always felt safe with ABS brakes which were always effective without snatching. The driving position was extremely good both ergonomically sound and with clear instruments in front.
Rear seat passengers were not quite so well off and rear legroom was nothing special. The rear seats though were comfortable and had a fold-down centre arm-rest.
There were 2 surprising things during my ownership of the car – firstly one tyre, the rear off-side, did all 102,000 miles and still didn’t appear over-worn. Well done Michelin. Had the rear near side not had a bad nail puncture at 85,000 miles I am sure it too would have gone on longer.
The second surprising thing was after a quite serious frontal impact accident it was found the car was a bit of a hybrid. It was part one years Audi 80 and part the next years. There were no real safety implications in this but it meant a long delay getting the right parts to repair the front of the car.
This set-back aside I would recommend a used Audi 80 without hesitation. They are a solid well built car which are a joy to own and drive.
Advantages: Superb build quality - just unbelievable for 17 year old car ! Disadvantages: 1.8S is slightly underpowered
, the car really does feel like a 'M' or 'N' Reg car....(Never a 'D').
The car has all the electrics and height adjustable drivers seat. No Power Assisted Steering which takes some getting used as every car I've driven since the Mid- 90s has had Power Steering. however after 30 minutes you are used to this, and it is great for the arm muscles! The car is a little slower than most 1.8 cars would be these days. Research shows that the 1.8 Carb engine develops 90bhp, which is low for a car of this capacity. However this is not a fault - it's just an entry level engine, and once the car is on the open road it's really happy and cruises perfectly between 70-90mph ("where the law permits"!). The Top Speed is recorded as 106mph (a little slower than you'd expect) but the 0-60 time of 10.1 is pretty healthy for a 1.8 Carb engine of such modest ...

Advantages: Good looks, no corrosion, good performance Disadvantages: Drinks petrol quite heavily, but diesel version is very economical
I have driven an Audi801.8S for the past 5 years, eventhough my car is now nearly 13 years old. SO WHY HAVE I LIKED THIS CAR SO MUCH?
Well for its time, the Audi80 was a very modern car, unlike any other for its time.
It was the only car to have a fully galvonised body, leading to a 10 year garuntee against corrosion, which my car has fulfilled perfectly, THERE IS NOT A TOUCH OF RUST ANYWHERE!
Also, this car had looks, the shape of this car was left untouched for almost 10 years! I mean, for instance, the Ford Escort has been modified time and time again to make it more appealing, but in the end they had to scrap it!
Four doors, all electrics, including mirrors, this standard 1.8 engine could reach up to 140 MPH with out any problem at all, the 1.8E, with its injection fuel system, could reach speeds much higher than this ...
