I needed to get a car as I wanted to get a bit more independence with an imminent baby. I ideally wanted a diesel automatic car as I like automatics, but couldn't find anything I liked as much as this very funky Audi A2, so I compromised on the automatic aspect, reckoning that I'd rather save some money on the fuel economy (and the road tax - a surprisingly refreshing 35 quid a year - bargain!). I also liked the relatively low emissions.
I wanted something small, pretty cheap to run and very easy to drive, but also wanted the car to be a bit different. Since then I seem to see A2s everywhere, but I think that might just be because I'm noticing them more now! Something reliable was also imperative, as I know very little about mechanics and want to have an easy life! We were already a one-Audi family (hubby has an A4) and I thought I'd have a look at the A2. What I liked about it was its upright, quite dynamic driving position, and the loads of space in the back because the back seat passengers' feet go under the front seat passengers' seats. I also loved the nippy, very responsive engine. Finally, it's also quite easy to get stuff in and out of the boot - useful if you have a buggy and loads of other baby-related stuff to move around (as I now do).
I bought the car just before I had our baby, so I didn't get the opportunity to use it for the first few weeks! However, I've now been driving it for several weeks and it's great.
The steering is light and responsive, the steering lock is great, the acceleration is good (though I do drive like a doddery old bloke most of the time, so I hardly thrash it!). Visibility is very good front and back - the extra low-level window at the back means extra-good visibility in that direction. It's easy to park and I'm really enjoying driving it - it's small and nippy without feeling unnecessarily "girlie" - I'm not a girlie girl. The gearbox is nice and forgiving as well, which is handy as I drive like the aforementioned old bloke. It's quite decisive and there's a lot of flexibility in the gearing so it doesn't matter if you change gear earlier or later than you ideally should.
Failings are few and far between - the glove box is a bit tiny and yet freakishly deep, so you have to virtually climb into it to retrieve anything. Things you forget could stay there for years! Door pockets also aren't great - they're a bit too small. Pockets behind the front seats would have been a nice touch. And visibility at the front corners isn't as good as some other directions (especially the back). But this is nit-picking really...
Fuel economy has been fine - I bought a three-year-old car so it was well run-in. Insurance is reasonable, but I'm quite old (!), so it's never going to be too bad unless I decide to get a Ferrari (hah!). It's got a lovely quality feel to it and it seems very reliable. Even the small things like the sound of the door closing are great and sound good quality. Definitely recommended.
