This review is based on my experiences of running this car over 10 days and 800 miles as a courtesy car.
The Audi A3 is a premium small family car and priced at the top of this particular segment. The car I used was the limited special edition version available on the road at a discounted price of just over £16,000. My initial reaction to being given the cheapest Audi in the range was one of disappointment as my own car is a well specified A4 with quattro and I also prefer the response of petrol engines. I was very pleasantly surprised by the A3 though.
As expected the interior build quality is superb and equal to that of more expensive models in the Audi range. Where the savings have been made are in the basic specification: Manual air-con, standard cloth seats, no front fog lights and single CD player etc. There is a good amount of room in the front seats, while the rear seats will carry 2 or 3 people over short journeys with an acceptable amount of room for this type of car.
The 1.9TDI engine in this particular model is rated at just over 100bhp. I expected to find the car noisy and slow in comparison to my own 3.0 petrol car, but in actual fact the 1.9TDI really suits the character of this car - it pulls well once the turbo has spooled up and is very economical. If buying a car purely for short trips around town, the 1.6 special edition will be quieter as well as offering the benefit of costing just £14,995 OTR which would probably more than offset its slightly poorer fuel consumption. However, if you plan to use your A3 on the motorway, the 1.9TDI offers much more torque and is able to keep up with rush-hour traffic. The handling is good and the ride quality firm but controlled. Another benefit of the 1.9TDI is it is slightly less prone to spinning the front wheels unlike 2.0TDI cars I have driven.
I expected not to like this car, but after 10 days of running it I found it made a compelling argument for the lower end of the Audi range. It could be argued that a higher-specified Ford Focus or VW Golf can be had for the same price. While this is the case, if sheer performance is not your priority, but solid build quality and good fuel economy are, then the Audi is a prudent choice. Moreover, after 3 years it has the highest residual value of all its competitors - you can expect to sell it on for around £12,000 or part-exchange it above £10,000.
Advantages: Fuel efficient, good-looking, high quality Disadvantages: Expensive to service/repair, no room for rear passengers
I bought the Audi A3 1.9 TDI Sport approximately 9 months ago, and have not been at all disappointed by my purchase. The basic model is available for £18,645 OTR, but of course with the number of add-ons that you'll probably want, the likelihood is that this figure may well exceed £20,000. The 5-speed 1.9 diesel engine gives 105 bhp, which may not seem like a huge amount, but it gives good acceleration, even in 5th gear at 70mph. 0-60 in 11.4 seconds, ... ...very good fuel economy, with Audi claiming a combined consumption of 55.4mpg (42.8mpg urban, 67.3mpg rural). With a fuel tank of 55 litres, you won't have to fill up too often.
The range of extras available is huge, but also a little on the expensive side, but this is to be expected from a manufacturer like Audi. Metallic and pearl options for paint cost from £490. 17" alloy wheels come as standard. Leather upholstery will set you back £980, sports ...

Advantages: Fast, robust, handling, economy Disadvantages: Centre arm rest makes use of handbrake a pain
Recently I bought a new a3,
i chose it to replace the a3 I had at the time which had proved economical, reliable and reasonably nippy, it was a 1.6.
The real determining factor for me though was the fact that the 1.6 was written off when a 52 seater bus didn't bother breaking and smahed the rear end in.
Standing back and looking at the damage I was impressed that the tailgate had still about a foot or so to go before reaching the back seats. Granted ... ...hour, but I was stationary.
So replaced the 1.6 with a 1.9tdi , 6gear. Having 130 bhp certainly makes a difference and this thing is quick when you want it but very economical if you're just cruising. I get around 600 miles on a tank.
The seating position is pretty adjustable, my car has the usual forward/back/tilt and backrest tilt as well as an electronically adjustable lumbar support.
The factory stereo , is very good, I have the 200 watt bose ...

Advantages: lots of comfort and room!! Disadvantages: Almost all small comforts are extra :(
I love this car. . well worth the money. . it drives so smooth and grips the road excellently, especially with the recent heavy snowfall.
I get looks when the car has just been washed I love it
The only drawbacks are things such as an temparature gauge and TRIP computer are all extras whereas my old car a 2001 Clio had all of that as standard.
It has nice features such as when the key is taken out of the ignition to leave the car the internal ... ...belongings before you leave the car and the light only switches off when you lock the car perfect at night!!!
Also the central locking is very powerful and is great at night or day in a busyy car park to find you car!!
Inside is very stylish and there is plenty of room in the car front and rear.
I also only fill my tank up once a month for around £40 whereas my clio would be twice a month at £30 per time!
Very economical and sooooo quite once ...

Advantages: BMW Badge, Subtle but mean looks, Quiet for a Diesel, Economy Disadvantages: BMW Drivers, V Poor Hifi considering price,
I have had VW Passat, AudiA4 both 1.9TDI 130BHP, both covering 130K miles in 3 years with very little consequence.
The move to BMW was to fulfil a childhood desire to own one of the best automotive marques available.
I now have a 2002 BMW 530d M-Sport, Manual, Black, Leather, Sat Nav.
The drive is very good. Smooth power delivery and remarkably quiet engine for a diesel.
Economy is very good considering the 200BHP the engine produces. On a motorway run, i get between 37 - 41 MPG. If your right foot is heavier tho, expect nearer 30.
The exterior is great from the front where the M-Sport kit gives the impression of and M5 and consequently looks purposeful and mean. The Halo lamps and Xenon lights add to the appeal and facilitate good vision at night. From the rear, it looks dull however.
Inside, it doesnt really look that ...

The Bora is Volkswagen's attempt to rival the BMW 3 series and AudiA3 and makes a good attempt.
I traded in my wife's cherished Golf GTI for the Bora 1.9TDI (diesel) Sport (150bhp) because :-
a) we needed a bigger boot
b) we had just bought a tent which wouldn't fit in the Golf
c) the Golf was making a few dodgy sounds
d) diesel sounded more economical
~~ First Impressions ~~
I actually think that the Bora looks quite sleek and sturdy with it's high boot area and slightly rounded edges.
The wheels are prominent giving the impression of good road-handling and the overall impression is one of a solid, reliable motor.
One thing I noticed was the "clunk" of the door being shut - like a bank vault being sealed.

The driving position is comfortable with good vision both to the front ...
Now please don't quote me on this, but I just nipped over to the Audi web site -- http://www.audi.co.uk/newcars/range.jsp?section=/models/a6saloon/a6saloon -- to do a quick bit of research for this review and it looks pretty definite to me that they are no longer doing a 1.9TDI version of the AudiA6 saloon. They are doing a 2.4 SE manual, a 2.4 SE multitronic, a 3.2 FSI SE manual, a 3.2 FSI quattro SE manual, a 3.2 FSI quattro SE tiptonic, a 4.2 quattro SE tiptronic, a 2.0 TDI SE manual and a 3.0 TDI quattro SE tiptronic, but look, there ain't a 1.9 SE TDI anymore. Well, ever willing to go against the grain dave27 changed his company car pretty damn recent and went for the old version of the Audi before these new fangled mothers found their way onto our streets, and I certainly have got a 1.9 SE TDI to call my very own. The others ...
