I purchased privately from a family who had cherished the car - it came in superb condition, with low mileage, and a full Audi service history. The light green (Jasper ... ...you will enjoy being an Audi driver. You just get the feeling that Audi's command a certain respect. The A4 has an understated quality and image, and it makes you feel special. Next time I'll go for a TDi Avant (if I can afford one), but meanwhile I'll enjoy what I've got.

I've had my 1998 Audi A4 1.8SE Auto 4 door for 4 months now and it still puts a smile on my face. Whether it's the solid 'thunk' of the doors closing, or the gorgeous tone of the superb 'Concert' stereo, the Audi continues to be a car I will never regret buying.
I purchased privately from a family who had cherished the car - it came in superb condition, with low mileage, and a full Audi service history. The light green (Jasper Green) really looks great when I've thrown the sponge on it, and the standard 16" alloys do a good job of setting the car off.
It's by no means a perfect car though. The rear legroom is really poor, and the boot openning isn't too clever either - I'd have had an Avant if I could have afforded one. The handling is a little slow and dull too - not quite as sharp as a BMW or Mondeo, and the steering can feel lifeless, particularly at low speed. That said, there is plenty of grip and poise.
The 1.8 petrol engine is much better than I thought it would be. It's smooth low down, and picks up really well for over-taking, whilst still returning 33mpg, which doesn't seem bad with the auto gearbox fitted. But that gearbox isn't the best - it gets a little confused with the small petrol engine, and it's not particularly smooth either. I'd have a manual next time.
Inside the car, rear legroom apart, you can't go wrong. The seats are comfortable and the wheel adjusts for rake and reach so getting a decent driving position is easy. The dials and switch-gear are utterly superb - everything is beautiful designed and a joy to drive in front of. The digital climate control is accurate and easy to use, the electric windows and mirrors operate majestically, and like I said before, the stereo is outstanding. The computer is also excellent and extremely accurate.

Expensive? Well what do you think? I personnally think that the UK car market is dividing - the executive cars are getting more pricy - like the Mercedes and BMWs and VWs and Audis - where as the Fords, Vauxhalls and Toyotas are getting cheaper. So is the car worth the money? Well - it's up to you - with climate control and elec windows, as well as a very nice alloy wheel choice - the car is a good car - but buy abroad - that's my advice. It's cheaper ...

Advantages: Fine cruiser Disadvantages: Poor pickup, slow.
I really like the A4 and have owned several, however the worst one by far was the 1.8. I'm told that with a turbo it goes pretty well but without it's a bit of a damp squib. The only redeeming feature is the ability to soak up massive amounts of motorway mileage with little fuss. However, you've got to hope you don't get held up because picking up the pace again is a real chore.
The engine sounds good and runs very sweetly. When the car is empty ... ...there is any sort of load. Its slow to pull away and never picks up as quick as you would like. Its get up and go certainly seems to have gone and a couple of times trying to nip into a gap i very nearly caused an accident. The trouble is that give it more revs to try and get the engine up to power and all that happens is the front wheels spin themselves stupid.
Motorway crusing is fine and having done over 700 miles in not much more that 7 hours ...

...my next dream was a Audi A4, now I have one. It goes like an absolute dream, easy gear change, quiet and smooth. I thought the running cost would force me to sell, but what a brilliant suprise, it is fantastic on petrol. I will be honest and say I can't give you any techno jargon on this car, but, I can tell you, it's great on fuel consumption, it has never let me down, and if you ever need to put your foot down, it really goes. The insurance is ... ...honestly my opinion of this car has escalated 100 times.
It was a hard way for me to find out, but this car can take a crash !
As soon as my insurance is sorted I will definatly be getting another one.
RIP to my Audi A4. ...

Ok - The Audi Automatic 1.8 SE is a great car - but if you can drive a manual version - why bother with an Auto? The automatic even costs more - at about 1200 pounds more in fact - on top of a hefty £20250 price tag! But to be fair the car is a good one - with climate control and a general feeling of quality inside a nd outside the car - I think that this is a very Nice german executive car - I think that the BMW 3 series is a better buy and the ...

The 1.8 A4 gives you the pwer that the car needs - a 1.6 really isn't powerful enough - and this one is. The car can achieve 0-60 in a reasonable 10.6 seconds and has a top speed of 127 - so if you don't abide by the speed limits - then the car won't hang about. And with Climate control and Alloy wheels - you can't go wrong for £20000 - well you could. But I recommend buying abroad or second hand - as this will be a better price for sure. I think ...

Just upgraded to the AudiA41.8T S Line a few weeks ago from my Audi Cab 2.6 V6. I thought I was going to miss the power of the V6, how wrong i was!. The 1.8T with 190bhp is a quick machine and once the turbo kicks in you have hot hatch power in a saloon.
These cars are ripe for tuning by way of ECU remapping, air filters, diverter valves and a number of other products which will increase BHP and torque.
The S Line trim with the extra body deeper grill, spoiler, wide arches make the car look sporty without going over the top. On the interior the aluminum trimmings along with the half leather sports seat are classy and comfortable for long journeys.
The suspension is stiff but solid on country road.
Some things that go wrong in this model although these may have been rectified in the 2004 onward models are ignition coil ...

Th sprting audiA41.8 - what can it deliver, huh? Can it match BMW in terms of performance - or does it reek of slowness? Well here's the facts - the car can manage 0-60 in a respectable 8.4 seconds - but that's hardly riviting - and the top speed is 137 and with 150 bhp the car has some grunt in it.
The AudiA4 is one of the most popular mini esecutives - it rivals the BMW 3 series and, althouhg it's not as good as the BMW - it is still a very worthy car - it's worth buying second hand also - as you can pick up a lot of deals - for under £9000 which is very good. ...

Thought it was time for an update seeing as I've had the car for over 6 months...
I'd always had a thing about Audis, I'd love an S6 but the budget won't stretch, so the A4 was an obvious choice. Looking at the range I had the choice of the entry-level 2.0 of the 1.8T in either 2 wheel drive or Quattro. Comparing the performance the 2.0 pushes out 130bhp with the 1.8T raising this to 150bhp, simple choice then. Comparing this with the 3 series, the 318 offers only 112bhp, with the 320 jumping upto 170bhp, though the new model increases capacity to 2.3 litres. After test driving both variants I decided on the 2 wheel drive, though the brochure gives the same 8.4sec 0-60 time, the 2 wheel drive seems quicker, probably as the Quattro has the power being put out to all 4 wheels. I must say though that the Quattro definitely has the edge ...
