I have recently completed 6 months running of an Audi Avant 1.8SE and certainly found it a very pleasant car to drive. Everything is very solid, it all works very well and looks good. I love the A4 Avant external view and with the alloy wheels and metallic paint it looks even better. Inside its all a bit grey and I'm not sure whether I would still love it quite so much after say 5 years. The engine is fine in everyday usage, its a bit noisy when pressed but cruises beautifully and returns reasonable economy even when pushed hard. I completed over 2500 miles across Germany to Prague and was consistently running at 100mph plus; overall I got 28mpg which considering it was loaded with 5 adults and a fair bit of luggage was very pleasing. However this brings me to my only serious drawback; the engine is fine when there is 2 people aboard and no luggage but load it up and it really starts to struggle. Not so much out on the autobahn where there is plenty of chance to build up pace but on twisty roads you've really got to work the gears to get anywhere, and then the economy really begins to suffer. The other slightly more alarming habit was for it to really struggle to pull out smartly into traffic. A couple of times I went for what appeared to be a perfectly reasonable gap and found myself being hooted by marauding Czechs!! You have to remeber to give it plenty of revs and really go for it, major drawback when its wet is that the end result is bags of wheelspin and little forward progress. Other than that I would recommend the car you just need to adjust your driving habits a little.
Advantages: looks great, overall quality feel Disadvantages: expensive, not very sporty, diesel better ?
First impressions of this car are that it looks great, especially in silver. To my eyes it is one of the best looking estates on the market, oops sorry, manufacturers don't like using that term, too many negative connotations, lets just say that this Avant, if anything looks a bit smoother and than the saloon counterpart, and has a much more accessible and practically spaced load bay. Behind the wheel all the controls have a real feel of quality ... ...door panels is integrated which gives the passenger compartment a snug all enveloping feel. The car is well equipped with the usual electric windows, mirrors, air conditioning, ABS etc, and a comprehensive computer. Thoughful touches abound, from the range of power sockets around the car to the key, where the metal part of the key folds away into the handle, to avoid it snagging when in pockets etc.
On the road it is very quiet and refined, soaking ...

...fail every other year and cost around 200GPB each side for the parts alone - the Audi 80 was a LOT cheaper to run in this respect. However, this apart, the car is good - solid and with good performance - fast over long journeys.
I would buy another one! ...

cars. OK, so it is expensive, but it is worth it. We have two Audi's in the household, and I don't think we will ever regret it! Oh, and yes the handles above the seats are oil-dampened! ...
Advantages: Value, quality, a practical package with a nice hint of sportiness Disadvantages: No CD as standard.
AudiA6 1.8 T Quattro
I have been fairly loyal to VAG over the years, so when my previous (company provided) Saab 900 came to the end of its lease I decided to have a look at either the VW Passat or AudiA6 Avant.
I was looking for something "interesting" and yet practical. I have a young family (two under-fives) plus a dog. I thought - hmm, a sporty estate might do the trick.
So we had a test drive in a Passat 2.8 V6 4motion Estate. Now, I used to have a VW Corrado VR6. An absolutely fantastic motor - v fast, great fun and fairly practical. This was sold when the Saab 900 arrived. The Saab was ok; a bit boring and sluggish (but nicely designed). I had hoped that the Passat 4motion would re-instate a sense of fun, with enough space for the family. Also, being the top of the Passat range, I expected a certain level ...
