It was dubbed a Quattro as it used a 4 wheel drive system to distribute the power to where it was needed the most.
The S3 was officially sold in Uk, Europe, Mexico and Australia but not officially in the USA.
Some of the Main Features that came as standard on the new car were; xenon HID headlamps with high pressure washers, front fog lamps, 17 in "Avus" alloy wheels with 225/45R17 tires, electrically adjustable Recaro leather seats, climate control, alarm, electronic traction control/stability program, Electric Mirrors, Trip computer along with many that are std on any modern car.
As with all new cars this day and age there were the many optional extras that of course push up the price Including; Bose sound system, boot/trunk mounted 6 disc CD changer, metallic paint, 18 inch 9-spoke RSTT wheels, glass sunroof, center arm rest, auto dipping rear view mirror, parking assist, luggage net, heated front seats, cruise control, aluminum door mirror casings and part leather/Alcantara (blue/silver/yellow) combination seat coverings.
The original standard on the road price was in the region of £25000 from a main dealer but as can be expected this could vary wildly, and even more so when adding on the optional extras.

Ownership: I bought a second had 2002 225bhp AUDI S3 in march 2006 at £15K which was the market value at the time and are still today going for £13K. This was not my first high performance car but was a big step up in quality, power and prestige from my previous cars. and i was expecting big things from it and some friends said my expectations were maybe a little to high, having owned it now for about 18 Months i will give you my Opinions on it.
Quality: The quality of the S3 was exactly what you would expect from a modern Audi competing on the level with BMW and Mercedes, the finish of the trim, carpets were flawless even after 4 years of use, the Gearbox was solid and so was the power delivery, all the electrics worked first time every time and still do today. The leather seats were in good condition with very few marks on them. exterior wise was much the same there were a few battle scars from stones and the supermarket days but this is to be expected of a second hand car.
Reliability: Now i but your all hoping I've had lots of problems, sorry to disappoint you but I've had very few in the last 18 months for a car that is now 5 years old its good going. what has gone wrong though is, rear washer jet tube fell off into the boot, 1 rear parcel shelf mount broke, the center arm rest broke and the passenger electric window motor broke. that is all. its been MoT'ed once serviced once had all 4 tyres changed once and thats it.
Driving and Comfort: Now this is my favorite bit as well its what you do with a car is it not drive it and sit in it. The leather seats once you have adjusted them to how you desire with the electric adjustments are really comfortable just be careful on hot days and short Skirts/Shorts ouch. The climate control is great for the hot days too although you do find yourself either to hot or to cold sometimes and take a while to get it just right, but hey better than panting out of a window like a dog. So now your set up and comfortable for the drive ahead, once you have given it a good amount of time to warm up and are ready to give it a bit of right foot, you will not be disappointed the grip is amazing helped both by the 4wd Quattro system and the ESP (electronic stability program) on take of and around bends its is hard to spin the wheels or loose traction, the pull when the turbo kicks n around the 4k mark is like turbos should be and will put a smile on anyones face, but its a surprise to most people as its a bit Stealth in its appearance not like some boy racer car its smooth one moment then a monster the next. One Warning on the comfort Long drives can become a little less comfortable just stop and take rests (long distance being 500+ miles) and watch out for the bumps its sporty and has sporty suspension so can be a little rough over them.
Audi Customer Service: The customer service that you receive from Audi Dealers is quite simply the best that i have ever received from any main dealer, they help you quickly efficiently and even though i am young don't ignore me looking at me like i could never afford one of there cars as i have been before at some much cheaper manufacturers, yes there service is fairly expensive but not much more than any other main dealer.
To sum up yes there are faster cars yes there are more Prestige cars and there are cars that can be just as much a thrill for less money but for a car thats a jack of all the trades its a great one and i struggle to find Fault and its a well Recommended car. How good the new version is I've yet to find out but hope it wont be to different. The fuel economy is good for the car it is to i regularly get 32mpg mixed and near to 40mpg on the motorway.
Advantages: Excellent Build Quality, Handling, Road Holding, Quattro 4x4 Disadvantages: Cost of Service, Not the prettiest car in the world

I've had my 2002 Silver Audi S3 225bhp for around 2 years now, I bought it second hand for around ... ...I would expect from an Audi at the top of its class.
Drivability
The car is great to drive and the pull away power and traction you get from the four 225/17/45 Bridgestone tyres definitely puts a smile on your face. It puts down about 221 bhp using all four tyres and can do 0-60 in about 6.5 secs. Get it above 4k revs and when the turbo kicks in you'll feel yourself pinned back into the seat. There's a real grin factor to this until you get used ...

Advantages: Fast, sporty but subtle, great handling Disadvantages: Fuel economy, lots of abused cars out there
I own a 2002 S3 225bhp. In a few words - fast, good mid range torque, sporty look without having the boy racer look. It's a classy car which is quicker than most on the road.
The only down points, and this is being picky is the fuel economy, noticeable turbo lag (especially when more than 2 people in the car) and the high service costs if you take it to audi. I take it to a vw-audi specialist though and they're fine. Prices are good now and i would ... ...cruise and bose. I have sat nav too which is worth it. I don't have chrome mirrors and wouldn't at the price quoted for the originals - plus slightly tacky looking as there are a number of fake S3s out there with the cheap plastic chrome looking mirrors.
Also I would prefer full leathers as the suedes get a bit worn on the drivers side but they look much better if you colour match. The quattro system is great but the esp does annoy me sometimes ...

Advantages: excellent solid package with lots of credability Disadvantages: mabye not wild enough for some
I bought my audi s3 in january, so after 6 months of ownership I`d thought I would write a review.
Cost of the s3 was expensive compared to most other hot hatches I paid £13k for a 2001 with 34,000 miles with full service history.
Options wise the list is almost endless you can have the usual metallic paint, leather, sunroof, armrest. The s3 options are chrome mirror covers and lower side mouldings, Bose stereo upgrade heated seats, sat nav and ... ...in for a service at Audi it needed the full one at 36k with a bit of negotiation I managed to get it done for £500. This is a bit of a downside but with service intervals of 20,000 miles its not so bad
I get about 30mpg average which is excellent considering the cars performance. The s3 feels like a bigger car when your in it smooth and comfy. I have heard off a few people that the rear leg room is very good, after owning a few hatchbacks this is ...

...have just collected my 2007 Audi S3....in one word "amazing".
The cost price of the car was approx £29000, which to be honest is overly expensive, but you get what you pay for.
265bhp, 4 wheel drive, 2.0 litre turbo engine and 0-60mph in just over 5 seconds.
I ordered the car in Dolphin Grey and added minimal extras such as Bluetooth, upgraded BOSE stereo since there is a lot of equipment as standard - full leather, heated seats, sports suspension, ... ...It doesn't have the standard Audi Quattro system, but the Haldex system.
Fuel economy is very good for this level of car, just over 30mpg, though on long motorway journeys in 6th gear, the FSI engine is meant to return mid to late 30's.
Rear leg room is a bit of an issue, but if that is a key factor in buying, you may be better to get the 5 door sportline - unfortunately the S3 isn't available in this guise.
Audi customer service is second to ...

...in March this year, but Audi had taken the S3 off the market - ARGHH - and the updated model wasn't due out for some time. (We ended up getting a TT instead - still Audi).
We test drove several alternatives when deciding on the S3 and none of them was a patch on it so If you've got the money (not quite sure how much they are now) you won't be disappointed. ...

Advantages: None that I can think of Disadvantages: Fantastically expensive
S G Smith Audi (BR33BT) and Bromley Audi servicing (Tylney Road BR2) - I strongly urge you to avoid both to save yourself a huge amount of money.
My 2001 Audi A4 Avant now needs its 3rd clutch and the car has not even done 60,000 miles. Audi even had the temerity to criticise 'driving style', when my wife and I have been driving for well over 40 years betwen us and none of our previous cars (VW, Fiat and BMW) have ever needed new clutches; total and very expensive crap, quite apart from these cars burning oil like others use petrol.
Choose any other make of car and avoid this dealership. Even in credit crunch times, they seem oblivious to the idea of keeping their customers happy. ...

Advantages: Great transmission! Disadvantages: Small trunk. My golf bags dont fit sideways.
After a several months of deciding on which vehicle to get , I went with the Audi A3 2.0T. I did plenty of research on the car and found very positive remarks from owners. After 3 test drives I was hooked on the car. The acceleration, handling and comfort were outstanding. Plus I just love the way the car looks. Comfort of the seats are great with lots of support. The buttons and gauges are easy to read and use. The transmission really sold me on the car. The shifts are quick in the DSG espescially while in the S mode and paddling the gears. Theres hardly any turbo lag and some torque steer. I can't wait to drive it again!. If I had one complaint it would be the trunk is a little small. ...
