The Audi TT since its release has been a highly successful coupe. Released in 1998 in Europe the baby Audi has certainly proved it is not a baby under the skin. That was bigger then our Freelander tank.

The Audi TT since its release has been a highly successful coupe. Released in 1998 in Europe the baby Audi has certainly proved it is not a baby under the skin. Our model we purchased is a 2000 X plated imported model (registered UK in 2002) has got just over 73,000 miles and is the metallic denim blue, with the RS4 18" alloys. A truly stunning car.
We bought our TT for £9495 not bad considering the mileage and the fact it's a 225 Quattro with 18" alloys, full blue inside, and a 10 CD changer. I live in Birmingham and picked up the car from the Bucks town of Chesham so had to quickly find my bearings in a town I had never been in a LHD car. It was interesting. After a few payment issues and long trawl on the train I finally set off from the dealership (Chesham Left Hand Drive Centre) and quickly found that the fuel needle hadn't even moved so had to find a petrol station. In the meantime I had to get used to driving in a TT and a LHD TT at that. Being low down I felt very encased and felt the Audi quality straight away, there was a few niggles which I put behind me until I got back to Birmingham. Luckily half a mile from the centre and also on the way to the motorway I found a Texaco and after finally finding the petrol cap button filled up the car which cost me £60 to my shock, which I then realised was because the Quattro models have a 62 litre tank!! That was bigger then our Freelander tank.
The nitty gritty
It didn't take me long to get used to driving LHD and soon came to realise the potential power. I drive a Volkswagen Bora TDI 150 (see review) so as you can imagine I am no stranger to pure mid range torque. I found the TT effortless to drive around despite needing a slight push to get the torque but still forgiving. The Quattro system is responsive and creates amazing traction sometimes a little too good, it helps cornering and the ESP works very well with it. The steering is hard and a lot of torque steer is produced but there is still plenty of handling control, minimal roll and plenty of stability. Well let's face it the TT is practically a go-kart so the handling is second to none although not the best I have experienced, read my review about the ST170. Unlike the rev hungry ST170 however the sheer power of the 1.8T is potent and the gas charged turbo sounds glorious as you rake through the fast although slightly notchy gearbox. I would say the biggest problem is that at the base it is still a 1.8 and it is very apparent at the low end. I have given this car the ultimate test and I am still not convinced I have peaked the 225bhp performance, don't get me wrong the car is like lightening and with out working too hard and extremely fast but with its low hard ride it can become tiring to drive and boring. On long journeys it is comfortable but I would recommend regular breaks because the stiffness can get to your back after about 100 mile. It doesn't help that our car is on 18" rims but the car does look the don and since the car does mainly short journeys then it can be forgiven. Economy wise around the town we have managed up to 270 miles but give it some thrash (which it does beg for) and you will have to make do with about 220 miles. On a steady run there is a potential of up to 360 miles.
However it wasn't all plain sailing we had a leak into the drivers foot well, the airbag light was on, the indicators flashed either quickly or stayed on steady and we found out a week later that the brake lights didn't work. So into Audi and £470 later we had all the problems sorted albeit on the same day I took it in but expensive non the less. Although the expense wasn't a surprise some of the past invoices related with car were shocking to say the least.
Interior
Inside there is no real room in the back but cosy in the front. The low roofline isn't too much of a problem and the cabin despite the size doesn't feel claustrophobic. In the rear however there isn't really much room for anyone over 4ft 3 but luckily we have two 5 year olds who can sit comfortable with their feet on the floor. In the boot it has a long and low tailgate but has a long floor (although the 10CD changer is fitted to the back of the seat) and there is 60/40 split rear seats for that little bit more practicality.
The equipment fitted to our car is blue coloured heated leather seats and interior, climate control, Sony Xplod mini disc player and 10 CD changer, also upgraded Bose speakers. There is also an aftermarket alarm fitted which has got anti hijack device by locking the doors while driving. Inside there is an air of quality and it has all worn well for 5 years and 73,000 miles.
Overall
This car looks beautiful and is the ultimate posers' car for the money but it's definitely not a serious sports car contender. I have to say for short journeys this car is a lot of fun, although it doesn't get on well with speed bumps and driving on rough back streets is a bit treacherous. On the country roads it is a lot of fun and smooth dual carriageways and motorways are a dream but driving continuously for a long time can get boring. There is a lot of excitement in the 225 Quattro TT but its all puffed out after too long and the novelty wears off. Outside the TT is beautiful with its twin exhaust and beautiful shape but I will have to say I had more fun with my rev hungry ST170 and prefer the punch from my lumpy TDI 150. For what it is the servicing and maintenance costs are very high and being 1.8T and a four wheel drive there is a lot more moving parts to fix, but with the first cam belt change at 120,000 miles there is a lot of confidence of the engines reliability.
Advantages: Style, solidity, grip, pace, safety, lights Disadvantages: Need to drive VERY fast to have real fun in it
...my company car was an Audi TT quattro 225 in Denim Blue. I had it for 18 months and covered 30,000 miles in it. (Note: My TT was an X-reg 2001 model. The latest version has slighty revised and improved handling, so if you're buying new, my comments about handling later on may be less applicable.)
First the good. I don't need to tell you it is gorgeous. If you've seen one you already know it. It has influenced the design of most cars since its release ... ...No-one builds a car like Audi (even with the couple of rattles, the impression was still one of solidity). No car looks as complete as the TT. But the driving experience is a little insipid. The biggest thrills the car gave me were when you pull away juuuust right and the car rockets forward leaving all behind you. When you drop into fourth to overtake on the motorway. But never going round a bend.
If you want to cruise in comfort, safety and style, ...

...express my concerns on the Audi TT, especially in the face of a wave of public adoration for the car, and it's hard to know just where to start but for me it's got to be the exterior.
The TT's styling is one of the most acclaimed around with jealous neighbours, proud owners and industry pundits alike all proclaiming it gorgeous, from the pretty snub nose to the curved roofline and on to the sloped flanks of the rear. When it was launched in 1998 ... ...has two back seats - Audi may just as well have made it a two-seater. The front seats certainly provide ample legroom and headroom for tall adults but their seats end up in a position that would cause a three-year-old sitting in the back to need their legs amputating, and while that sloped roofline provides the necessary headroom in the front it's not so accommodating in the rear.
The TT's two proper seats in the front, however, are comfortable ...

...silver (one in the pic) Audi TT Coupe and will try to sum up the good and bad points about it.
Points to note:
Great performance. Basically all models have the same engine size and is only a 1.8L. This suprises most people as the cars have a, well deserved, reputation for speed. The power results from that engine being turbo charged. There are two models - performance wise - the 180 BHP and the 225 BHP. I've got the 180BHP and is honestly fast ... ...is a respectable 30 although AUDI recommend that super unleaded is used which costs an extra 10pence per litre generally.
Insurance: This is the real killer. I'm 27 and have no no claims discount so It's costing me £2000 a year to insure. A lot I know but worth it!
I have had to get the tracker system fitted before my insurance company would even consider it! That was an extra £300
The reason for buying the model I did were:
I like Silver!

Advantages: smooth and sleek Disadvantages: I don't have enough money
The Audi TT Quattro is a serious beauty of a sports car which reverts me to a drooling wreck everytime I see one. The design is completely different from other Audi’s on the market but yet still unmistakably Audi.
The TT is available as either a coupe or roadster design – both are equally cool. The appeal is easy to see from the outside. It’s clear rounded shapes form it’s bold and dramatic style coupled with the traditional ... ...of the car reminds me of pandas! What? I hear you cry! I think it’s probably something to do with the black windowed headlights mimicking the panda’s black patched eyes.
I have to admit I don’t own one, have never been in one and can’t drive but I have it on good authority that the TT is a real classic sports car, both fast and manoeuvrable on the outside and an interior of leather upholstery and aluminium detail.
Standard ...

Advantages: Wicked sports car, qulity drive Disadvantages: Not good value for money
Has got to be the smoothest car on the market. Great shape and speed with lovely leather seats. However the car isn’t value for money; my brother bought this car and let me have a drive. I found that in comparison to the most cars it has very poor handling. When turning corners I noticed that you really had to put a lot of strength into the turning. Furthermore it uses a lot of fuel to the mile, I only get 23 miles to the gallon. In comparison to ...

Advantages: Supermodel-attracting reputation; great build quality; excellent engine Disadvantages: Woeful four wheel drive system; jelly-mould looks
Audi's iconic coupe has been a favourite with motoring pundits and fashion savvy hairdressers since its launch in 1999 and has been one of Audi's most successful sports cars since the original Quattro of the 1980s.
But is it really as good as many make out?
The incumbent TTCoupe - which is being replaced this year by a newer, sleeker version that just happens to have a nose remarkably similar to that of the latest Ford Focus - shares its underbelly with a Mark IV Volkswagen Golf, which just happens to share familiar components with similarly sized cars in the Seat and Skoda range too. The Golf has always carried a good reputation for its handling prowess and, coupled with Audi's clever four-wheel-drive system, the recipe looks good for a plateful of gourmet automotive entertainment.

Advantages: Great looks, excellent acceleration and 4wd roadholding Disadvantages: Low mpg, only room for 2
on a handsfree phone kit.
The insurance was and is cheaper than I expected (age helps), partly becasue it is a safe car. I haven't had it serviced by Audi (20000m with an interim at 10000m) because their prices are ridiculous. I can get it done with genuine Audi parts and oil for half the dealer price.
* Likes: looks, quattro road holding, heated seats
* Dislikes: six CD changer which is on the passenger side in the back seat, aluminium gear knob which is freezing in the winter
* Not bothered: seating capacity, low mpg (27 urban, though mid 30s on a long drive)
I haven't been tempted to buy one of the new models because 1) you only get quattro with the bigger engine and 2) I do less milage now and can't justify the expense of a new car.
* I went to try a BMW Z4 before settling on the TT. But no one came to talk to me in the showroom ...
Having recently been in a position of getting an AudiTTQuattro in black for a knock down price, and only being the second owner, it was an impulse buy.
At first everything was good, it had a CD changer, heated seats, computer telling you everything, and the looks you got when driving were fun. The novelty really REALLY wears off fast however.
After about a week of driving, having such a noticeable car started to become a problem rather than being a bit of fun. It might just be me but I was constantly checking it to make sure it was safe from people. Even in car parks, where there were much nicer cars, I would be paranoid because it would stick out so much.
The window was certainly interesting. Designed more for what it looks like than function, you really had to sit well in order to get a proper view of the road, and if ...
