After lusting after an Audi TT for the best part of two years, I found myself in the local dealership placing an order, one Saturday afternoon.

The reason for my latest impulse purchase was the announcement of the (then) new 180FWD (Front wheel drive) coupe, which was quite a bit cheaper than it's heavier and slower 4WD (Quattro) counterpart. This release had finally brought the TT into my price range, at a shade over £21K (before options) it's not what I'd call a cheap car and after adding 18" wheels, BOSE sound system, 6CD Multichanger, and pearlescent paint I was looking at the best part of £24K. Ouch, I thought!

Due to the car only being released that week, I was told by the dealer that the car would be factory order only, and that I'd be looking at around 3 months before delivery. 3 months passed and the car was still not in the UK. However 2 weeks later the car duly arrived and was everything I expected and more.

Initial impressions of the car were excellent, upon setting eyes on it for the first time in the showroom, I had to pinch myself to realise it was actually mine. The handover from the salesman went well, and it was then my turn to drive off into the sunset, well set, due to the lack of sun in this country.

The car drives really well and is eager to progress without being tiresome. This is due to the 1.8 Turbocharged engine which, whilst being somewhat dated compared to some of Audi's more recent powerplants, is still pretty advanced by todays standards. It is 20valve, not the usual 16 produced by most other manufacturers. This, according to the technobabble, enables the car to burn fuel and generate power in the most efficient way. I have to confess, this checks out when you analyse the fuel economy with the car returning 28mpg around town, and over 30mpg on a decent run. Not bad for a turbo'd engine in my experience.

The gearbox is a five speed affair, not the six speed, as is standard in it's bigger brothers (the 225, and V6), but having driven the 6 speed, this in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the car. Possibly due to the longer ratios negating the need for gear changes as often.

The handling, whilst not up to track standards, is very good and over some of the shocking examples of UK roads it fairs very well, with no hint of skipping or tramlining. Whilst only being front wheel drive traction is also exceptional, with the traction control only intervening when necessary.

The interior of this car was something I fell in love with from day one, so you could say I'm biased. But I have heard people quote "the best inerior on a car under £100k". Whether I'd go that far is questionable, but there is something about it which makes you feel special. Whether it be the excellent heated sports seats, aluminium detailing, or well thought out dashboard, the interior scores highly.

The styling of the car is something else which people either love or hate, either way the car has become an icon of it's generation, there is no getting away from it's instantly recognisable stance.

The petrol cap is a piece of automotive jewellery which in itself deserves an award, maybe due to the amount of detail involved in the alloy hex nuts bonding it to the rest of the vehicle.

The upgraded BOSE sound is excellent, and whilst some argue the sound quality is not as good as an aftermarket ICE system, it is still a very good choice, should you not wish to bodge holes in your car.

All in all, this is the best car I've ever owned, it will always have it's critics for not being hardcore enough, or producing the same power as cars in it's class. But for me it's a great example of a car which managed to make it's way from concept to production without being watered down too much.

Lets hope Audi improve with the New TT, and raise the bar just a little.

I gotta get me one of these
Review of Audi TT Coupé by aflynn_01

Advantages: the dogs in car design, engineering, and all round sex appeal
Disadvantages: I haven't got one, I haven't got one, I HAVEN'T GOT ONE

...the love affair with the Audi TT Coupe began. Thankfully they were not available in this country, so I couldn’t get out of control whenever I saw one. Then two months back I saw one being driven near my home. This old bloke of about 60 was driving it about 20 mph down a dual carriageway!! I wanted to drag him from the drivers seat and shown him how this baby should be driven. I didn’t I just went sailing past him in my Rover 25 shaking ...
...The Audi TT is available in two designs – the Coupe version has a hard roof, the roadster version a soft top. Engine size is 1.8 with a bhp of 180 or 225. It does 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph (Bet I could beat that!) and it does 30 miles to the gallon. It has a 6 speed gearbox and is the mother of all cars (sorry) It comes with an amazing range of standard equipment – Five spoke alloy wheels Driver and passenger ... Read review

Dont be disappointed
Review of Audi TT Coupé by jonnyleck

Advantages: Fuel flap is brilliant,sleek,sportie,cute.
Disadvantages: everyone is buying them

...as proved by the fact Audi were never going to build it and now are spending a few million on advertising. The TT was a concept car and eventually Audi brought it on to the market, it has been well received by most, and has one numerous car awards. The interior is fantastic, comfortable leather heated seats, air conditioning and an excellent retro looking dashboard. There are a few amusing features, you open the fuel port by pushing a button in the ...
...exhausts or you do not. Audi seem to have gone for a sort of show, so to speak. I immediately got rid of the twin exhaust system and put in a over sized remhus system. The front bumper on the TT is two high from the ground and is not sporting enough, as such I had this ripped off and replaced with a Caractere sports bumper. The engine itself is very sound, however for a sports car it just is not fast enough. The TT can be bought as 180 HP single ... Read review

Review of Audi TT Coupé by rjpickett

Advantages: Very Trendy
Disadvantages: 2003 most unrealiable car

...consumer magazine Which? rated the Audi TT and the most unreliable car for 2003. This research was based on consumer responses to the number of breakdowns experienced by owners of new cars in the first twelve months of ownership. A staggering 25% of brand new Audi TT's will breakdown in the first twelve months. According to the research it is the engines electrics which let the car down. Before spending your £25K remember you could buy at least two ... Read review

I bought one... should you
Review of Audi TT Coupé Quattro by  intel

Advantages: Stylish, Design, Performance, Bulid
Disadvantages: Purchase cost, only practical for 2 people really.

...Okay, so I've bought a Metallic silver (one in the pic) Audi TT Coupe and will try to sum up the good and bad points about it. Points to note: Great performance. Basically all models have the same engine size and is only a 1.8L. This suprises most people as the cars have a, well deserved, reputation for speed. The power results from that engine being turbo charged. There are two models - performance wise - the 180 BHP and the 225 BHP. I've got the 180BHP and is honestly fast enough. The only difference between the two is that the turbo has been 'tweeked' or boosted if you like to give an extra 45 BHP which im sure makes the cars performance quite remarkable. I'm a fairly sensible driver but when I put my footdown - in a safe area of course! - The car accelerates very well indeed, not quite scarily so but almost! Design. The car... Read review

Sleek Beauty
Review of Audi TT Coupé Quattro by  hakkved

Advantages: smooth and sleek
Disadvantages: I don't have enough money

...The Audi TT Quattro is a serious beauty of a sports car which reverts me to a drooling wreck everytime I see one. The design is completely different from other Audi’s on the market but yet still unmistakably Audi. The TT is available as either a coupe or roadster design – both are equally cool. The appeal is easy to see from the outside. It’s clear rounded shapes form it’s bold and dramatic style coupled with the traditional interlinked four-ring logo. In my mind the front view of the car reminds me of pandas! What? I hear you cry! I think it’s probably something to do with the black windowed headlights mimicking the panda’s black patched eyes. I have to admit I don’t own one, have never been in one and can’t drive but I have it on good authority that the TT is a real classic... Read review

Selecta
Review of Audi TT Coupé Quattro by  D1A1UK

Advantages: Look at it!
Disadvantages: Stability without a spoiler

...Could the audi TT be the most stylish Audi ever made? I certainly think so - as do a lot of others. Just take a look at the car and you'll see that there really is no other coupe of the same price range that can compare on styling. I think the best colours are Dark Blue and the most popular Silver, but really the car looks great in nearly all colours. The car has also got a lot of performance, and I think that the early problems of high speed stability have now been fixed, which is great! A top car! I cannot believe how much better the Audi TT looks compared to the old Coupe. The car is a revelation, nothing more, nothing less. Brilliant.... Read review
