Squeezebox Duet - great finish, lousy start! Advantages: All your music accessible from neat, simple controller. Lots of enthusiast support Disadvantages: None that you wouldn't expect from such a small device. I had been thinking about buying one of these for several months, and this year, my wonderful wife gave me the money to go and buy one. I bought it from Richer Sounds for £225. This story has a happy ending, so don't give up after the first part. I connected it all up as per the instructions, and had problems from the start, the wireless wouldn't connect at all using WPA, had to set my WLAN to WEP, it took several attempts before it would connect, ... ...reconnect when woken up. Whenever I got it working, the following morning it would be unable to connect again. Factory resets in abundance, but never any improvement. In the first 30 days of ownership, I probably managed to get 3 days of use out of it. I went away on holiday, and when I got back, contacted Richer Sounds. Although I had already passed their 30 day exchange period by a couple of weeks, they offered to exchange it for me, and put one ... Denon We Go, Becoming a DAB Hand In The Process Advantages: All in one and very versatile. Good sound given a quality source Disadvantages: Fiddly set-up. All menu driven, so a bit tricky to navigate too. ...being sworn at. The Denon S52DAB (described by Denon as a “Wireless Network CD Music System”) is an interesting proposal, looking not unlike one of those Bose All-In-One efforts that they are so coy about printing the full price of except in the small print of their ads. Yes, it’s a stereo system but with that unconvincing separation between its speakers that will leave a true hi-fi nut tut-tutting. However, for what it is; a glorified clock ... ...that both I and the Denon guy understood. I made a hard-wired Ethernet connection to the router, and set the ‘update firmware’ process going. Half an hour later, it was ready to run and try the wi-fi link again. Lo and behold, having set the Netgear router to precisely the same SSID and password as was set by the Apple Airport router, we were up and running listening to Californian stations, KRAP etc. I can only assume that the Apple router baulked ... Total Rubbish! Advantages: Looks good, thats as far as i got. Disadvantages: It doesn't work!!! I already have a Philips Streamium MCI500H hi-fi system, and I have been looking for a while for the prices to drop on the WAS6050. I had read that the sound quality was good, and I liked the square cube design of the product. With its small size, it would be ideal for my bedroom. When I discovered it for £69.95 at Richer Sounds (compare that with the prices on Ciao), I took the plunge. The main reason for buying the WAS6050 was because (as part ... ...wirelessly from the 160Gb hard drive on my Streamium MCI500H. However, it will also stream music from a pc if you don't have this hi-fi, and it will connect to the internet in it's own right so you can listen to internet radio... apparently... I say "apparently", because I never actually got it to work. Set up requires you to position the WAS6050 next to the MCI500H, in order that they can register with each other. The Very DAB Advantages: Inexpensive, decent output for a bedroom or smaller room, mp3 capability Disadvantages: No good for a larger room due to the 5 watt output per speaker Over the past year my daughter has really got into music in a big way, and I have posted a few reviews on some of the equipment I have purchased for her. She usually listens to music through her laptop or on her mp3 player, but just recently she has got into listening to the radio, so her little Philips boombox which I bought a few years ago, has been the favoured way of picking up her favourite station. Unfortunately she struggles to tune in different ... ...poor fine motor skills – and her autism means she isn’t the most patient of children either. I had tried suggesting she listened to the radio through her TV, which has Freeview built in, but once again the autism kicked in and she refused to use the TV as a radio, declaring this to be “stupid”. Sony gigajuke - music to my ears! Advantages: Great sound quality, virtual DJ functionality is excellent Disadvantages: search function missing, iPod connection let down ...there are some flaws where Sony could have put a bit more thought into the solution, however I can accept these for the functionality we get.
