Auto trader was established some 20 years ago and since then has been a godsend to those looking to buy a second hand car at a bargain price. The Auto trader has a few different “sister” publications such as Bike trader, Truck Trader and Caravan Trader though the Auto trader is the most common of them all.
The Auto trader book varies across different regions i.e. the North edition is a lot shorter than the midlands edition though most are almost identical. The Auto trader book is a paperback book with mainly paper pages though some are glossy.
Contents.
All the pages are divided into sections for example. Prestige cars, General Vehicle’s etc. There are 15 categories in all:
· Prestige · General Vehicles · Sports · Classics, American and Left hand drive vehicles · Estate vehicles and MPV’s · Four wheel drive · Bargain Buys (Under £1000) · Diesels · Cherished Number registrations · Breakers and salvage vehicles · Auto adds extra (To advertise e.g. Car stereo. (Available for private users only) · Motorcycles · Caravans, Motor homes and Boats · Plant, farm machinery · Vans, Commercial minibuses and HGV’s (Heavy Good vehicles)
Buying and Selling guide.
Auto trader has a buying and selling guide in the Midlands edition. This talks you through the ins and outs of buying and selling your car. This guide helps you decide what car to buy whether it be petrol or diesel whether to go for nearly new or a grey import etc. It will inform you about the registration changes which went ahead in September 2001 a registration identifier which helps you to put a year to a reg for example 1990 is G or H registered.
The guide will help you to decide where to buy your new car and a useful guide to checking the car over e.g. looking for rust etc. There is an insurance guide, which informs you about No claims bonuses and different insurance covers.
The magazine has a directory in the buying and selling guide, which has all the numbers you need for:
· Legal advice · Used car inspection companies · Technical advice · Car history check up lines · Dealer problems · Insurance problems.
The book also gives you a guide to selling your car, dealing with buyers and of course the test drive. Closing the deal is probably one of the most important things to worry about when selling your car and that’s why Auto Trader has an informative guide about negotiating the price, handling the money and the documentation.
Advertising.
Considering how many people buy this magazine its not at all poor value for money with advertising from £0.
For a standard photo with a single photo and a single wording (25word maximum) for a car £0- 499 its absolutely free.
Cars for sale between £500-1000 with a single advert cost £12.00 with a double advert £18.00 with a triple advert £24.00 and with a king size advert £30.00
Single photo on MONO costs £26 with double £42 with triple £58 and with King £74
Single photo in colour costs £28 with double £52 with triple £76 and with King size wording £100.00. A king size advert is 7cm x 6cm
In my eyes when advertising I thin the single colour photo is the best value for money. All prices given are only for 1 week’s edition.
An Auto trader worker will come to your door at an agreed time and take a photo for the advert. This service is free though you can slip your own photo in with your self-written advert to avoid this. Some are a little funny about letting you see the photo but my advice is don’t hand over the cash until they let you see the photo. In general good photos are taken.
The latest edition Auto trader comes every Friday, as it’s a weekly magazine. It can be found in all good newsagents and dotted around various supermarkets, petrol stations across the country.
I find this magazine exceptional value for money. The midlands edition costing only £2.00 with around 400 pages of adverts. Most cars are competitively priced and you’re bound to find a bargain with a mixture of trade and private adverts. After a certain number of adverts are placed (I think its 5) in a year you are then stated as a trader!
In my Midland edition there is a buy new section, which has a small write up about some new cars available. There is also a section with list prices on every model available in the England. These prices are not entirely accurate as most dealers have permanent “special offers” and most are willing to shake a few pounds off the list price.
In general this is the best second hand car sales magazine you could have when looking for a bargain second hand car. I find it to be excellent value for money, excellent customer service and an excellent quality magazine.
Advantages: Good regional coverage, photographers come to you Disadvantages: Adverts can be expensive if you choose larger ones!
...advertising stands between the two. Auto Trader is one such publication, and is a name that most people are aware of. The advantage of the Auto Trader is that it is a national company, that publishes various regional editions. This enables the seller to reach more readers than their local area paper would attract, whilst ensuring that most readers are within a reasonable travelling distance.
I’m not entirely sure how many different regions ... ...have combined them.
The Auto Trader contains various sections, which enable the buyer to pin point the type of vehicle they are looking for. These sections include: General cars, sports & performance cars, diesel cars, vans, motorbikes, and even a bargain (under £1000) section, as well as many other categories. The advertisements are a mixture or private and trade, although it should be clearly stated which, at the bottom of the text. All adverts ...

Advantages: Weekly Thousands of vehicles Informative Disadvantages: Not for literary buffs
What constitutes literary enjoyment is very subjective and varies from person to person. Unlike Britain most of the German trains actually run on time and some folk may get enjoyment out of reading the German Railways timetable. Some males may get pleasure out of gazing at scantily dressed young ladies in the pages of Men's magazine and a lot of ladies may enjoy a good "sob" story in a popular Woman's magazine. Many of the members of this web site ... ...of real literary merit. Well the long established British publication, Autotrader,by no stretch of the imagination would claim to excite the literary senses. I guess knowing the price of a 1998 Nissan Micra in good condition in East Anglia is XXX pounds is not rivetting stuff for most of us. Equally being given information on MG TD's for sale in Derbyshire is not going to excite that many of us. All this changes, however, if you want to sell your ...

Advantages: great range of vehicles of all sorts, cheap magazine, buyers guides Disadvantages: black and white on the whole
I have to say that having read various second hand car books and supplements, Autotrader still rules all. They have an unbeaten number of adverts in their publication and the magazine is in depth. It doesnt just include private ad's but also trade ad's and it even has a buyers guide in there as well. The magazine is well seperated into good sections. These include Prestige Motors, Collectors and Classics, Bargains (1000-00 and under), General cars, ... ...with Vans, minibuses, hgv's and also a spot for Motorcycles, caravans and the section at the back includes breakers and salvage and insurance and services. Each section is split into alphabetical brand names so if your looking for anything from an Austin Maestro to an MG F or from a Citroen Berlingo to a Leyland lorry, this is the magazine for you. Also they have an excellent website at www.autotrader.co.uk with a selection of the cars that appear ...

Advantages: good read, interesting, great website, sensible layout Disadvantages: none
I often buy Auto Trader because I like to keep abreast of what is happening in the motor industry and I like to see annoyingly how much my recently purchased new van has dropped in price as soon as I paid top whack for it! The layout of the magazine is very straigtforward and makes sense. It is split up into several sections like cars, classic cars, vans, HGV's and so on. Each of these sections is split alphabetically and goes through each manufacturer ... ...can find almost anything in Autotrader. They have all sorts from the good old British motor days of Austin to a spanking new Korean Daewoo!!. You should also try the Autotrader website because this is a real good website with all the adverts listed and many have colour pictures with them which can give you a fair indication of what condition it is in before you actually go and see it. If your interested in motors then you should try these 2 resources ...

Advantages: Well established, popular magazine for those buying & selling cars Disadvantages: Expensive to advertise in, used as LEAD FODDER by every canvasser in town
...Ad I placed in the Auto Trader
This review is really about my own extreme dissapointment with what little value The Auto Trader seemed to offer me when selling my car
Firstly it needs to be said that I have a couple of dodgy second hand car dealer types as acquaintances so I canvassed their opinions as to the best way to sell my car privately
WITHOUT FAIL, everyone I asked said, "stick it in the Auto Trader" so I had the impression that it should ... ...So, I log onto the Auto trader website and am quite pleased that I can upload my own photos and write my own ad, pay for the ad, edit it etc etc etc with relative simplicity
Your print advert ( The one that appears in the actual magazine ) is limited in the amount of words you can use to describe your vehicle but for your Online version of the ad you can write hundreds upon hundreds of words and include many large digital pictures
I opted for the ...

Advantages: I got insurance on my car Disadvantages: They don't even bother reading emails + double your premium because of their incompetence.
I had bought a replacement car when the old one went to that scrapyard in the sky, and was keen to find some value-for-money insurance. So, I went on a couple of comparison sites such as gocompare.com, confused.com and moneysupermarket.com. Some of the prices were pretty good, I guess since I have been claim free since passing my test in 1995, female driver, only doing the social, domestic and pleasure (i.e. school runs, grocery shopping, bill paying, ferrying elderly relatives about etc) so I decided to upgrade from Third Party Fire & Theft to fully comp. I had had a quote off the insurer I was with (Hastings) but they wanted £25 to change my policy and another £80 because I had gone from an N reg to a T reg. Hence, much cheaper to go elsewhere and tell them to shove it.
So, the AutoTrader insurance was slightly better priced ...
Advantages: Free amendments Disadvantages: No buyer interest at all, just a poor expensive advertising medium.
To sell your car, you can do it yourself or you can pay someone to do it for you (either by trade-in at a garage or through a selling agency)
I didn't know that selling agencies existed before I started to sell my car, I'd just done the standard thing and put an advert in the AutoTrader.
Two days later, from the advert on the AutoTrader website, I received a telephone call from Todd from www.automatch.info to sell me his company's service; to 'match buyers with sellers' through their website. They had a list of people just waiting to buy a car like mine; if I was to sign up there and then, I 'would have people calling that afternoon'.
Apparently, Automatch advertise on Sky News' interactive service, in What Car, Parkers, and on the back of Esso receipts, so coverage was good.
I checked with him that the price was right ...
