Manufacturer's product description
The architect's studio: more than a workshop to produce drawings, it's where designers come together to explore, develop, critique, and share design ideas. Autodesk Architectural Studio 3.1 replicates the traditional design studio with tools for design communication and creation. Whether you're using Autodesk Architectural Studio for sketching, modeling, presenting, or collaborating, its tools are intuitive, familiar, and easy to use, no matter what your level of CAD proficiency. Architects often turn to pen and paper for sketching preliminary design ideas, or to materials like chipboard and clay to model design studies in 3D. Now with Autodesk Architectural Studio's direct-manipulation tools such as pens, markers, and erasers, you can explore conceptual design ideas just as easily as you would with physical media, but with the added benefits of digital technology. The advantage of working in a digital environment is that you get your conceptual design ideas into the digital workflow from project outset, plus you can more easily and quickly copy, cut, paste, and manipulate design information. The architect's meeting area is where team members come together to share, discuss, and present design. With Autodesk Architectural Studio's built-in conferencing tools, you can extend this traditional meeting space to remote team members within your firm's intranet, regardless of location. Let's say you're in New York City and need to review elevation studies with team members in Chicago. With only two clicks, you can share your desktop with an unlimited number of participants, who can also contribute by sketching, modeling, and annotating. With intranet conferencing, design issues get resolved faster, plus you bypass plotting, faxing, and courier costs. With Autodesk Architectural Studio, you can combine different media in a single workspace - sketches, 3D models, DWF (Design Web Format), CAD drawings, animations, and more - and manipulate the media in ways that you can't in the physical world; for example, sketching right on top of a 3D model or animation. Create compelling presentations by combining and interacting with various media. More than just displaying your data, you can instantly incorporate team feedback. Does your client or principal want to know what the design would look like with a tower or third floor? No problem. Presenting your projects in their best possible light is easy with Autodesk Architectural Studio.
Advantages: Ease of use, SmartSound, improved audio and titling Disadvantages: No background rendering, some new features a bit fiddly.
...and convert them to a different format in one hit. Nice to see is the support for MPEG4 (DIVX) and AC3 Dolby Digital audio as well as 16:9 footage. Note though that the first two options require plug-ins at additional cost (£13.78 each).
Ulead have done their best to ensure you have as much at your disposal as possible when it comes to creating your video masterpieces. One things still sorely lacking though is background rendering. Until you prepare your final output either to tape or DVD/CD, no rendering is done. Pinnacle's Studio 9 does this in the background as you work and it's a great time saver when filters and effects have been used.
Conclusion
Whilst I felt some of the newer features could have been more intuitive in use, they all added to what was already an impressive package. I wasn't much impressed by the Movie Wizard...

...product lifecycle from design through to testing. For home coders, there are also individual free versions of development environments for the main languages, a generous move by Microsoft if you don't need all the bells and whistles of the full blown Pro toolset.
Professional Toolset
It's probably best to say what major components you get with the pro version of Visual Studio 2005. You get VC++, C#, VB and VJ# along with appropriate forms editors complete with mobile support, code snippets, database tools and designers. You also get editor support for XML and XSLT, release versions of all the x64bit compilers (although for Itanium support you'll need to go for the Team System version), SQL Server Reporting Services as well as Crystal Reports and the developer version of SQL Server 2005. All in all, a lot of software for your money...
