or will it?
At last the ultimate product to make your hair curl
If you’ve had the misfortune to stumble across my photo you’l not fail to notice that I have curly, frizzy hair (mainly curly). I’ve been dependent on John Frieda’s Frizz Ease Hair Serum since I was a student (and I mean dependent on it) but I’m always willing to try new products which always result in me loyally returning to John Frieda – that is until now.
I’ve seen Aveda products eagerly recommended by other ciaoers including their anti-freeze serum. On a recent spending-spree in Harvey Nicks I sauntered up to the Aveda counter (it’s pretty big) and spoke to a nice young chap about the serum. He instead recommended ‘be curly’ to me in order to make the most of my ‘natural assets’. It costs £14 for 200ml and the claim is: “For defining curls, taming frizz, heightening shine. Wheat protein blend expands when hair is wet and retracts when hair is dry to lock in curl. Tames frizz while infusing shine”
The key ingredient does appear to be the wheat protein but it also contains glycerine, that essential ingredient in all frizz-easing products.
The smell:- the product smells a bit on the sweet side – almost sickly but it isn’t very pungent and doesn’t seem to linger once your hair is dry.
The packaging:- fairly functional packaging is favoured by Aveda so you get an oatmeal coloured squeezy tube with insutrctions on the back, which are.. Instructions:- Apply a small amount to damp hair – and I mean a small amount! I have shoulder length hair and a fair amount of it and I use a tiny pea-sized amount of ‘be curly’. Comb through your damp hair and then style as normal – they do recommend scrunch drying to enhance your curls, or leaving your hair to dry naturally which is what I often favour to avoid having enormous hair.
Longevity:- although the product is quite pricey it’s good value for money. The results are fab and you use such a small amount the tube will last for ages. I’ve only just got mine so I can’t tell you how long for yet. Frizz Ease now costs around £7 for less and I find I had to use about 4 times as much serum.
The results:- simply brilliant! The amount of frizz is dramatically reduced without your hair being weighed down or left feeling sticky. I always found other products often left me looking like I’d been heavy handed with wax or gel. Even my boyfriend asked me if I was doing something different to my hair and he meant it as a compliment – and it takes a lot for him to notice that kind of thing! The only slight down side is that is increases the knottyness especially if I tie my hair back I get increased ‘nest-effect’ where my clip’s been.
Where to buy it:- I bought mine in Harvey Nichols but you can also buy Aveda products in House of Fraser and of course in the Aveda salon in covent garden where I had a jolly good manicure a few months back. More info on Aveda products can be found on www.aveda.com.
Conclusion:- This is the best product for my hair that I have ever used and it actually lives up to it’s claims. My hair is shinier and has less frizz but retains curliness and body. I totally recommend this if you too have ‘difficult hair’.

The company behind the products:

Aveda was founded in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher. An austrian who wanted to start a world-wide plant-based cosmetics company run on ethical employment principles, a company which would produce and sell personal grooming aids untested on animals with ingredients sourced on fair-trade principles.
Today, Aveda are considered the Grand-daddy of the organic ... ...on the house of Fraiser Aveda counter (a curly ginger top herself) said she swore by this stuff so I handed over my £14 for the 200ml after being persuaded by the glossiness and curliness of her locks. Ok, “handed” was the wrong choice of words, she pried the money from my clenched fist after I fainted upon being told the price : )
I went home and washed my locks, combed it out as recommended on the packet and then scrunched ‘Be Curly’ through. ...

...hair cut at the famous Aveda Institute in High Holborn. The experience was fantastic, reflecting the hefty price tag. Like all salons, hair stylist have the alterior motive of selling you their products. In Aveda, they didn't need to push for the hard sell, those who could afford the hair cut would ask for the products without checking the price tag. As the stylist was finishing my hair, he introduced me to 'Be Curly' one of the Instyle Best Beauty ... ...I am not a big Aveda fan. Their products always strike me as too expensive and not that nicely packaged. Despite this tube of beige sitting in my bathroom looking distinctly out of place with the sleek lines and cool packaging of the other stuff I've been conned into buying, I think this is a GREAT BUY, especially for the summer where the natural wave is back. So go and make this investment, you won't regret it. ...
