Aveda are a company know for using plant extracts and other naturally sourced ingredients in their products. The website states 'Aveda believes in conducting business in a manner that protects the earth, conserves resources and does not compromise ability of future generations to sustain themselves'. There is a lot of information on the Aveda website that you can access about sustainable development and how the products contribute to this so ticks another box as an ethical company.
Anyway, Brilliant shampoo, as the name suggests, claims to promote shiny clean hair. It usually is in the 'deep cleansing' category on the websites that stock it. Particularly good for textured or chemically-treated hair as it also claims to moisturise. Contains certified organic calendula, camellia and aloe which are the soothing ingredients but also contains other organic ingredients such as patchouli and ylang ylang etc for a more sensory experience.
So, when it arrived i couldnt wait to wet my hair and lather up. It is like a creamy clear liquid and does feel like it is going to be moisturising. Kind of like glycerin type look but without the sticky consistency of glycerine.
The smell is also noticeable. Some people have likened it to musk and that this was a disadvantage. I think that must be the patchouli but i cant remember exactly what patchouli smells likes so i can only think of like a musky sweet geranium smell. I usually dont like products that smell too strong as they can get a bit heady and theyre usually just jam packed with artificial perfume. But with Aveda, the products are all based on natural ingredients so you have to expect the strong smelling pure essential oils. It is quite pleasant.
Then i get to where i blow dry my hair and wow. Firstly i cannot believe how soft it is. The brush just glides through and although the hair dryer can sometimes take away the fresh smell of shampoo, you can still smell the lovely essential oils. I think what is most shocking to me though is the shine. I dont have shiny hair and never have done. My hair has everything wrong with it. It is really fine and blonde (which seems to absorb light) and as ive said before its really over processed and dry from colouring and straightening. I cant actually give it the moisture it needs because then it gets too lank and i like a lot of volume.
To get my hair to be how good it is from this shampoo, one product, is just unbelievable. Ive used it a few times now with different conditioners and it still never fails, i could use soap as conditioner and it would still probably feel amazing. Especially as shampoo is just supposed to clean and conditioner is supposed to be doing all the hard work. I would particularly urge brunettes to try it, if its fantastic on me as a blonde, the shine would literally be superstar-esque!
I dont know how many shampoo bottles ive read that say 'doesnt weigh hair down'. God that term is so over-used! If it is going to really sort out the dry ends then its obviously going to over-moisturise the roots. But this balances hair. Also with my hair, it is that dry that once you go to bed and wake up the next morn its almost dehydrated in the night so the day after washing it lifeless and dull. With this, the moisturised feeling is still there!!!!
I hate to stop using Kerastase Bain Satin because i do love it, but i feel better using a more natural product. Especially when you think your scalp is absorbing everything. Id rather it be getting the benefit of essentials oils and aloe vera to soothe it.
I honestly do not know how Aveda have created a deep cleansing shampoo that makes even my hair super shiny, light, and moisturises and balances more that a shampoo speficially made for that purpose. But to be honest i dont really care, im just going to keep buying it!
Advantages: non-sticky, gives incredible shine Disadvantages: only available in 200ml, no trial size
...on wet OR dry hair. Aveda states that applying it to wet hair gives it slightly more hold but I have found the product to be weightless either way, as long as you don't use too much. I tend to apply a small amount to my wet hair, blow dry it straight, add some more then seal in the shine with straightening irons (ceramic are the best and less damaging to your hair). Heat is definitely the key factor in bringing out the best in this product. However, ... ...you can always ask the Aveda Consultant (if purchasing in a store) for a small sample. After all, £14 is a lot to spend on something that may not suit your hair (you never know!). Note, Aveda don't make official samples due to their stance on environmental issues (waste of material??)or so my local Consultant told me... unless she was trying to fob me off! However, if you ask nicely (they don't throw them at you!), they will fill a small tube with ...

Advantages: A must for textured hair Disadvantages: Perhaps the price
The brilliant range of Aveda is mainly for textured hair, I believe. I have wavy hair and I use the shampoo, conditioner and retexturing gel. The 3 products used together produces more curls, rather than just waves. I use it everytime I have a night out, and also the night before I go on holiday, if I do not wish to wash it too quickly into the holiday. The combination keeps the style much longer than other shampoos. As it's name suggests, it's 'brilliant'. ... ...a nightmare as they get off the plane. The retexturing gel is what it says 'a gel'. Although you know you have a styling product in your hair, it's not sticky, and will brush out, without any residue left, immediately. I find the range a bit expensive, but I only use it in 'special situations', and it is therefore well worth the money, considering that I have bought each in quantities of 200g/200ml, about 6 months ago, and each still has at least ...

...the products after buying other Aveda products, which had been impressive. At the time of purchasing the products i had long, coloured hair, which was dry in texture; just the sort of hair which these products were aimed at.
After the first application my hair looked and smelled amazing. My hair was more manageable - minimal tangles. My hair appeared shiny and glossy and felt really clean, as well as feeling really soft - even my boyfriend commented ...

Advantages: boost curls Disadvantages: price and availability
When you look at the title of this shampoo you hope that it really is going to be as good as it makes out to be.Luckily enough this shampoo did just that for me. I wasnt sure if this was going to do anything for my hair as it was a brand that I had not come across before so was more than weary about trying it. The only reason I had a chance to try it was as I spotted it on holiday. With my hair completely exhauted from the holiday I was in desperate ... ...hair back into curls not just the slight waves they had been reduced into.Whehn I used it my hair had been uplifted and had some life and control back into it.My curls went back into place and I use this shampoo on special occassions due to the expensive price and the lack of availability .If you want your hair to go brill again give it a whirl. ...
