The company behind the products: ******************************** Aveda was founded in 1978 by Horst Rechelbacher. An austrian who wanted to start a plant-based cosmetics company run on ethical employment principles which would produce and sell personal grooming aids untested on animals made with ingredients sourced on fair-trade principles.
Today, Aveda are considered the Granddaddy of the organic and ethical beauty business. From the start, they manufactured products environmentally friendly on the inside and out like hair-sprays propelled by air-infused technology rather than the ozone layer destroying CFC’s used in other canisters of the period.
My first experience with their products was when my Mother-in-law-to-be included a sample bottle of their Hydrating Lotion in my Christmas stocking last year. I was converted to this lurvely stuff when I woke up 13 hours after first applying it and still had that super-soft feeling on my skin as if I has just come out of a terminal mineral spa. (Opps, I have given away the ending here! :)
"Flavours" available: ********************* Normal to Dry Normal to Oily
So what is this stuff supposed to do?: (Company blurb) ************************************* this is a moisture-rich, quick-absorbing lotion to replenish normal to dry skin and protect against dehydration and irritation, (well they are hardly going to claim it causes your skin to go green :) loaded with emollients from coconut, jojoba and "other plants", it also contains camomile and lavender to help skin stay supple and resilient.
So does it do the business?: *************************** There are no guidelines on the green glass bottle with the recyclable plastic nozzle about how much to be used but it is only lotion after all, I thought, how hard can it be to figure out?
Due to this present being received during the Christmas season and me having a policy of leaving no party unattended, I will admit that the first application was put on in a somewhat slapstick manner. In fact, I probably put on about 10 times as much as I should have. When I remembered the next morning, I spent the whole day thinking "oooh oh, we're going to pay for this one with spots" That is what ALWAYS happened to me in the past when I put too much product on my face. So what happened? nothing! I couldn't believe it, furthermore the soft feeling on my skin lasted about half-way through the next day.
What does it smell like? ************************ It has a mild smell that reminds me of tapioca and jam, very mild but very homely. This fades very quickly once the cream is absorbed into your skin.
"Ahaaaa", I though, "now when I put on the correct amount for my skin, I won't get the same results". In order to cover my face, I need about enough lotion to hide the tip of my middle finger. However, with this smaller dosage, I did get the same results, I could not believe it, the same velvety softness through the next day as well. I don't know what it is about this formula but it seems that your skin just drinks it in to absorb it to a non-greasy finish (which makes an excellent base for powder and liquid make up) but even if you put too much on, it does not have an adverse effect on your skin.
My skin type is normal (summer) and dry in the depths of winter (whose isn't) and this stuff is an ideal lotion for use during the British winters. I also really like using it after I have been to a Smokey air-conditioned pub and my skin is feeling a bit dry the next day. You only need to use a small amount at a time (a small bit of experimentation will help establish what this is) and my 50ml bottle is just about to run out now. (Hint hint m-i-l-2-b! ;)
So where can I get this wonder stuff from?: ******************************************* http://www.lookfantastic.com 50ML £10.50 House of Fraiser 50ML £10.50 Shoon Shops (Bath, Bristol, Bluewater and coming soon to Bond St.) 50ML £10.50

Advantages: Light moisturiser with a refreshing smell Disadvantages: may not be suitable for drier skins
Aveda is a company I really approve of - their ethics are fab and so I love trying their products as some of my previous reviews has shown!
So here is my review for yet another Aveda product - this time it is a facial moisturiser from their Botanical Kinetics range, called Hydrating Lotion. I bought it in a 150ml size bottle with a handy economical pump dispenser, and it is lasting ages. Oooh and while I think about it the bottle is made from a ... ...I got it from an Aveda counter at a large department store but I know you can buy it from www.lookfantastic.com for £23.38 if you are a member (joining is quick, easy and free!) plus a bit of postage. If you think the average pot of cream is only 30-50ml this makes it suprisingly good value in my opinion. It smells really fresh and clean - the most obvious scent is lemon but I can also detect a slight coconut in there too, makes a nice change from ...
