AVEDA PURE ABUNDANCE VOLUMISING SHAMPOO
Naturally, being Aveda, the bottle is kept simple and functional. It's a pale green flip top bottle which stands up easily and is easy to squeeze out (even to the very last drop). The scent is much like that of Clarins' Relax range, which is based on Geranium (a strong planty smell). I like it now and again, which is handy because I only use this shampoo about once a fortnight but I know I'd hate to use it more often than that because apart from being expensive I would easily tire of the scent.
My mum was using this shampoo and conditioner combination but has short hair and complained that it made it too soft so she kindly donated it to me to try. Having long straight hair I sometimes wish that it had more volume so I was keen to see whether this would deliver.

Naturally, being Aveda, the bottle is kept simple and functional. It's a pale green flip top bottle which stands up easily and is easy to squeeze out (even to the very last drop). And again, being Aveda, the product smells completely earthy and natural. When you use it it's a clear/slightly yellowish gel-like consistency which lathers up quite a bit when using only a normal amount. It smells very strong: an advantage if you like the scent because using it in the shower becomes a steamy aromatherapy session; a disadvantage if you didn't because it's one of the best things about Aveda products and difficult to ignore in a confined space. The scent is much like that of Clarins' Relax range, which is based on Geranium (a strong planty smell). I like it now and again, which is handy because I only use this shampoo about once a fortnight but I know I'd hate to use it more often than that because apart from being expensive I would easily tire of the scent.
Once lathered it's easy to wash out of your hair and takes no longer than a standard shampoo. Already, with a few runs of my fingers through my hair it is left relatively knot free - which is quite impressive because it can get a bit matted after using some shampoos. Nevertheless I follow it up with the Pure Abundance conditioner and rinse.
RESULTS
Immediately after washing your hair you may be able to smell the scent on your hair but it doesn't really remain, which is an advantage for me because I don't wish to smell like a garden.
Once I have dried my hair in the normal way with my blow dryer (not using other styling products) I find that it is a lot softer and shiner than usual - which is probably more due to the conditioner if you're considering buying just the shampoo on its own. I think it's quite a deep cleansing shampoo because my hair always feels spotlessly clean once dried. However, my hair doesn't stay particularly knot-free with this shampoo/conditioner combination as I still get quite a few minor tangles.
With regards to the volume I don't think that there is any more root lift than normal but the rest of my hair looks a bit thicker and more texturised even though I've not used any styling aids on it. It's a satisfactory result but at £11.50 per 250ml bottle I think it's fair to say you'd expect miraculous results.
VERDICT
It's hard to give a fully balanced opinion on this because when I use it my hair really does look healthy and more volumised than usual, but if asked to buy this myself I'm really not sure I could justify the price tag. Although in saying that, I think if I wasn't so into hopping around different brands then I could probably justify it as I know it works and I would just use it infrequently (as I have been doing) to make it last a long time.
So the verdict is…if you're loaded with money and have fine hair, definitely go for it. If you're not loaded then consider buying it and using it for the odd times when you want your hair to look more volumised.
